air jaws is back for Shark Week with a new Discovery special that will attempt to capture images of great white sharks in a different way than viewers are used to after all these years. I call Air Jaws: Top GunsFamiliar Faces of Shark Week Dickie Chivell and Andy Casagrande are on the hunt this time . However, according to executive producer and creator Jeff Kurr, the air jaws The team was very lucky when it came to “fighting” the killer whales this year.
A recurring theme at Shark Week in recent years has been the problem of orcas hunting great white sharks, leading to a massive decline in the number of white sharks. According to Kurr, the orca problem prompted the team to create the air jaws history this year around the species commonly referred to as the “killer whale”. He explained:
Great whites have been besieged in South Africa for the past six or seven years by killer whales who grab these great whites, gut them, eat their livers and kill them and decimate the population there. It is a theme that we have explored at Air Jaws for the past few years and this year is no different. The fact that Andy and Dickie are trying to catch the biggest white shark ever seen jumping has been very difficult because there are far fewer great white sharks than before and the killer whales kill them so often that they won’t have a chance to grow up to. their full size as before.
In the early years of air jaws (with the first Discovery special in what would become a popular series airing in 2001), sharks were much easier to find, including the great white shark known as Colossus. Jeff Kurr noted that even though great white sharks are at the top of the food chain, they stand no chance against killer whales as they do against other animals. (tear-off seals .)
The executive producer expected Dickie Chivell and Andy Casagrande to have an impressive gap best weapons, but they were very lucky “considering what great white sharks have to go through.” Killer whales are obviously causing major problems for the sharks, but what about the TV crew trying to capture breaches in South Africa? Jeff Kurr revealed:
They definitely complicate the shooting. This year we were very lucky to be shooting Air Jaws. We were able to capture these incredible gaps and I think the day after filming and filming ended, the killer whales arrived in Mossel Bay, where we shot, and killed a great white shark. When that happens, all the other great white sharks in the area somehow get some sort of signal or message that says “Oh-oh, the killer whales are here” and they all leave. The day after we left, when the killer whales made that kill, all the tall whites were long gone. I think it was almost a month before the sharks returned. So yes, we fought with killer whales.
The air jaws The team “struggled with the killer whales,” according to the EP, but the timing worked in their favor for this year’s stage. If they had taken a little longer to get to Mossel Bay, they might have had a severe shortage of sharks to film and Chivell and Casagrande wouldn’t have had the break they did. The best weapons the special could have been very different from what viewers will see on July 25th. Kurr continued:
I mean, the orcs have to survive. Nothing against killer whales: I love killer whales, I love all sea creatures, but that really made things difficult not just for filmmakers. Sharks are obviously in trouble, but the people running the shark ecotourism dive operations nearly had to shut down because the killer whales wiped out the great white sharks. So it’s a big problem and I don’t know how it will be solved because these killer whales patrol the coasts, along the coast every day. They are very varied, basically going to the great whites and eliminating them. I hope the tall whites can find a way to survive and adapt. They have been around for millions and millions of years. So hopefully they can survive this.
Great white sharks face many problems and Shark Week can raise awareness of the problems that sharks face, such as pollution and overfishing. However, raising awareness that killer whales are destroying populations of great white sharks will not save them, so as Jeff Kurr said, we “hope” the sharks can survive.
air jaws was one of the hubs of shark week for more than twenty years to make the Great Whites known and to help change their reputation after jaws film franchise. You can find Air Jaws: Top Guns at the Découverte on Monday 25 July at 8pm
Of course, the species can be found during Discovery’s shark-filled programming week.
