About Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii
Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was recorded prior to the wide success sequence of Pink Floydstarted with the album The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). The film documents what the band did before becoming a giant in album sales rankings on both sides of the Atlantic.
Recorded in the ruins of the former Roman amphitheater in Pompeia, Italy, this movie captures Pink Floyd in a public concert. Filmed in October 1971, the show marked the first live show held in Pompeia and includes songs like “Echoes”, “A Sauderful of Secrets” and “One of These Days Days”.

In addition, the film includes rare behind -the -scenes images of the band’s work in The Dark Side of the Moonin the Abbey Road Studios. Drummer Nick Mason states in a statement that “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a rare and unique document of the band acting live in the period before The Dark Side of the Moon”.
The Restoration
In this new version, the film was restored by hand, photographer the photogram, from the original 35mm negative – discovered in five cans with dubious labels in the Pink Floyd files. This discovery dug up the same movie that passed the cameras during those days in the middle of the ruins of Pompeii for over 50 years.
Led by Lana TophamPink Floyd Restoration Director, the team was mission to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original image. The film was scanned in 4K using advanced techniques to ensure thin details. The colors were improved and each frame was revised and repaired, with minimal granulation adjustments. In a note, Topham states:
“Since 1994, I’ve been looking for the elusive images of the film Pink Floyd: Live at PompeiiTherefore, the recent discovery of the original 1972 negative, cut into 35 mm, was a very special moment. The newly restrained version features the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute original edition of the presentation with the additional segments of the Abbey Road Studios documentary, filmed shortly thereafter. ”
The film also features a new audio mix for cinema and television made by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos that aims to improve the depth and clarity of the film. Wilson’s goal was to remain faithful to the band in those days of scorching hot in 1971. He added:
“Since when my father made me a brainwashing when I was a child, playing The Dark Side of the Moon Repeatedly, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band. They are mine Beatlesthey are deeply rooted in my musical DNA. VI Pompeii For the first time in a granulated copy in a local cinema. The film made an incredible impression on me with its exploratory and bound rock, made by four musicians who seemed to synthesize the notion of cool intellectual. It was an honor to remix the soundtrack to accompany the incredible restoration of the movie, made by Lana Topham, which seems to have been filmed yesterday. ”
The release of the Pink Floyd at Pompeii – McMLXXII album will have the performance performed as a full live record for the first time. The 2025 version remixed by Steven Wilson will be available in Digital Audio/Dolby Atmos from May 2. CD and vinyl editions can be purchased only abroad.
