The lyrical aspect gained enormous value in Brazilian rock from the 1980s. But what were the artists responsible for raising the level of lyrics during this period?

In an interview with Runner 5 (via Rockbizz), the guitarist Edgard Scandurrafrom Iran!gave this credit to two important names in the segment: Renato Russosinger of Urban Legionand Cazuzavocalist who emerged in the Red baron And then focused on a solo career.

Initially, Scandurra pointed out that the artists and bands of Brazilian rock did not always pay due attention to the lyrics. At that point, other aspects seemed more important – until Renato and Cazuza came up with a different approach.

“We were much more connected in the scene itself than in the lyrics! Who gave this gas to the lyrics and turned rock punk into something more pop was Renato Russo and Cazuza. They put a level above. ”

The level change, according to Edgard, was through the amplitude of the topics covered. For him, Urban Legion and Red Baron contemplated topics that fled from mere worldly or typical youth reflections.

“We left that day to day life and adolescence. They put the thing on a superior plan. ”

In a way, such a perspective forced all the other Brazilian rock artists to review their methods of letters of letters. After all, Renato and Cazuza gained huge success in this way – which indicated a public desire for more elaborate verses.

“This was cool because it charged us all. Everyone had to think more about it, because, until then, it was the scene, it was the attitude and it was the guitar. Sometimes we didn’t even understand the person’s letter right. What was worth to us was the attitude. We had to reevaluate this concept. ”

Iran! and the letters without rhymes

During the same interview with Corridor 5 (via Wiplash), Edgard Scandurra shared a curiosity about the letters of Ira!. According to the guitarist, several compositions of his band do not have rhymes, a very common feature in this style of writing.

“A song that wrath! touches, called ‘Exit’ended up entering the band’s first album, and I composed when I was 16 years old. At that time, I liked to work with words that sound like in English. I think rock has its own language, and often English – or even French – looks like it teaches it to us. It’s a sound that carries its own musicality, you know? That’s why I started writing letters thinking a lot about the sound of words, as I won’t shout anymore that I love you ‘(excerpt from the song). My compositions almost have no rhymes, and that came from this phase, when I was 15 or 16 years old and was beginning to express my youth dissatisfaction. ”
