MusicUblime in Brazil: Jakob Nowell talks to RS about shows, Bradley Nowell’s Bradley Nowell’s return to his father in the legendary group of Ska Punk, which performs with offspring and more attractions in Rio, SP and Curitibapor Redation

Bradley Nowell’s son assumed his father’s post in the legendary group of Ska Punk, who performs with offspering and more attractions in Rio, SP and Curitiba

“I don’t believe it: I’ll be playing in another part of the world – very f#da”. Jakob Nowell demonstrated Rolling Stone Brazil be well excited about the visit of the Sublimeitself, to Brazil. Something your father, Bradley Nowellunfortunately could not do.

The legendary American band arrives in the country as part of an offspring -led tour that also brings together Rise Against, The Damned, Amyl & The Sniffers and The Warning. The complete lineup, with all bands, can be watched in São Paulo (03/08) and Curitiba (09/03). Already in Belo Horizonte (03/05), Rio de Janeiro (03/06) and Porto Alegre (11/03), the main attraction will perform with some of his colleagues. That way, besides SP and Curitibathe sublime is scheduled to touch the River. Tickets are for sale at EVENTIM.

It is the continuation of a story that, so impressive, should become a movie – something that, it seems, will happen. Graduated in 1988 in Long Beach, California, the sublime released three albums in its original configuration, consisting of Bradley Nowell (voice and guitar), Eric Wilson (low) and Bud Gaugh (battery). The first two, 40Oz. To Freedom (1992) and Robbin ‘The Hood (1994), were moderate success. The third, named only Sublime (1996), finally enchanted the planet, but left two months after Bradley’s death due to an overdose. It was the best band the world would ever have.

Sublime in 1995

At least so far. After a period under the name Sublime with Rome by the frontman Rome Ramirez – with five national tours – that in 2023 Eric and Bud resumed the sublime with Jakob occupying his father’s vacancy. Born 11 months before Bradley’s death and a proud resident of Long Beach, the 29 -year -old musician previously made a career as a member of bands as Law (also from skka punk) and Death of the Author (progressive metal) before setting up your own project, Jakob’s castlein 2021. That is: He already had experience when the opportunity to join the “uncles” Eric and Bud came up.

Jakob’s decision reactivated the sublime appeared during a visit in September 2023 to the Phoenix Theater, a place in Petaluma who hosted the group’s last show with Bradley. There was a meeting of former chemicals found by chance. The young man himself had overcome drug addiction, the same problem that took his father’s life. There he realized: gathering the band was a life mission.

Sublime in 2024

After a sequence of just over 20 shows in the United States and Mexico between 2023 and 2024, it was time to expand horizons. Here comes the initiative to excuse through Brazil, a country about which Jakob just seems to know one thing: it is a place of great gamer culture, which is interested in. Regarding the festival -shaped tour, with other attractions, he admits: he only learned that he would perform with more bands besides offspring at the time of the interview. “Maybe they told myself and I forgot”confesses, before telling a curious story involving the group of Dexter Holland, Noodles and company:

“I always liked offspring, but when I was about 15 years old, in one of my first jobs – Junior Counselor at YMCA (Christian Association of Young) – I talked to some boys who were more ‘cool’, I spoke of Offspring and they said, ‘Dude, offspring is gay to Car#lho’, reacted as if I had a disease. It hit me. But they were kids and, fortunately, no one else thinks that way. There is no reason to be evil with any band.
I think a lot of music that was not considered so ‘cool’ or ‘hardcore’ 20 years ago has now been reevaluated, like, ‘Come on, we don’t realize how good it was, the song now is much worse, let’s go back to that!’ I saw the people of that festival in Vegas [When We Were Young] excited with the Paramore And I thought, ‘You all said you hated it when I was a boy, now you are excited?’ It was always a nice band. ”

What to expect from the “new” sublime

Fans who want to watch the sublime in Rio, Sao Paulo or Curitiba should expect something a little different from what was presented in North America in 2024. Jakob Nowell said that the repertoire of the shows should include some different songs and even a distinct, more accurate stage in addressing all Southern California culture instead of bringing only “Faculty Bedroom Arts”.

“The first year of the Sublime’s return consisted of feeling all the vibe of what a band’s show is like in modern times. Now, let’s try to add some more songs and we are also working to compose unprecedented material. If we enjoy a lot, we can even play, although I know that fans want to hear the good old ones. Let’s play a lot of favors of the fans. Do you know how many musicians hate playing their hits for years? I don’t have it, because I never had to play ‘SANTERIA’ or ‘What I Got’Then I love to touch them. And they will also roll some less known songs from the albums. In addition, we are working on some legal changes in the scenario, stage design and things like that. ”

The new frontman also guarantees to be well intertwined with Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh. For him, the veterans colleagues are two of the most underestimated musicians of rock.

“We know each other well over the last year and we are more comfortable now. They are really very good, very underestimated. Bud is articulated, but also wild and hits very hard. Eric touches these insanely complicated but at the same time captivating lines. I am very proud to be able to play with these guys, and I understand why these elements needed to be there so that the songs were good. ”

Live sublime in 2024

As for unpublished songs – whether or not they are played during shows in Brazil – Nowell reveals to be in the process of composition, says that close people indicate a sound similarity with the debut album 40 oz. To Freedom And it points to a format I would like to use to launch these tracks: collaborations with other artists. He explains:

“I would love to use these songs as a chance to collaborate with other musicians from that time and new ages that were inspired by the sublime. If we released new songs, I would never try to be like: ‘This is a new sublime song’. Obviously it will come out under the sublime name, but I want to make it clear: the 1996 sublime album is the last of the band. If we release a new album, I want you to be thought of as an epilogue. A tribute and a celebration of my father’s music, with the collaboration of a group of other musicians who were inspired. ”

Accepting inherit the throne

It took a long time until Jakob Nowell, finally, agreed to embrace his father’s legacy. Of course, there was a lot of fear of occupying the post that was one day from Bradley, described by his son as “A very high -level singer, songwriter and guitarist”. He reflects:

“Being in this position now means everything to me. It is a very complicated and emotionally complex question for me, but it seems that I found my purpose now: to continue his legacy as I try to build my own. I always thought of the sublime as a local Long Beach band, but I never realized how big she was. But in my head it could be much greater. It’s still a kind of ‘cult’ band in my head. The more we play in different countries and strive to keep the brand relevant, there will be fans to conquer. ”

During an interview prior to September 2023, the young artist even said that the public idealized his presence in the sublime, while he thought he would not be that cool. In the end, it turned out.

“I think I was convincing myself not to do what I’m doing now. For a long time, I thought it wasn’t something I should do. I thought any band gathered after a while wouldn’t be as it was – and I think some fans still think so. I will never sing the songs better than my dad, or even at the same level, but if I arrive 75% near him and offer a fun show, it’s worth the ticket. ”

Other initiatives and future of the sublime

Interestingly, it was not the past of the father who motivated Jakob Nowell to become a musician. Your desire to dive into this universe came after watching the movie TENACIOUS D – An infernal duo (2006), starring Jack Black and Kyle Gass. This explains the variety of the projects he became involved in, from Ska Punk to progressive metal, also passing through Jakob’s Castle, where, in his words, he explores all his influences “from pop, alternative and even electronic”.

Jakob Nowell, from Sublime

At the same time, Nowell founded the independent label SVN/BVRNT Recordswhich, also according to your description, “It tries to include Southern California musicians that we believe is the next step in the local alternative music”. Its goal is to be able to make a general connection between Sublime, Jakob’s Castle and the seal.

“Through the sublime platform, I hope to connect to sublime -influenced musicians, work with them on a band’s album, create new songs and, along with SVN/BVNRT Records, give young California musicians a chance. There is still an amazing scene in southern California. I would like that after this stage my focus was on SVN/BVNRT Records, Jakob’s Castle and the bands we work with. And then we would have the sublime doing some shows a year at big festivals, to keep the dream alive. ”

That is: at least in theory, the most intense pace of sublime activities should last only a few years. But fans should not be discouraged. On the contrary: Jakob imagines that much more will come around.

“I see the future of the sublime as follows: for the coming years, continuing to do many shows, expand the brand, bring new fans, releasing a really good album – which will definitely not come close to what happened in the original sublime albums, but could put an epilogue from the whole history of the sublime – and tie it all. There is a tragedy in this story, but she created a huge family that is even greater than my own family – and greater than anything my father or uncles [Eric e Bud] They could have imagined. If you are a sublime fan, there will be a lot happening in the next three years. ”
