Rolling Stone Brasil Interview Rodrigo Lima (Dead Fish)
Rolling Stone Brazil: How is your expectation for this debut show at Lollapalooza Brasil?
Rodrigo Lima: “I am very happy to have been invited. The festival has had Turnstile and other Brazilian bands, such as Black saucebut it is almost unusual to be on the lineup. And I find it very important to occupy spaces. I also find it wow to open the stage early, because I am the old man, who at midnight wants to be at home. And I want to see how the festival works, because I never went. ”
RS: You play on Olivia Rodrigo, Fontaines DC, Empire of the Sun and Jão. Is there any artist you want to watch specifically – either on this day or any of the others?
RL: “He has. I’ve watched the jão once, in Recife, and found it cool. I want to see the Tool – I leave the message to the festival organizers. A friend of ours who worked in the podcast we did to the land, the without rehearsal, showed a norway mine that forgot the name, but I found it very interesting, cool for the club [nota da edição: é provável que Rodrigo esteja se referindo à artista Girl in Red]. And I want to see the Olivia Rodrigowhich is the top of the top of pop for this generation. I want to see how it works live, because she talks to her generation. Remembering that I do not make any participation, although she is called Olivia Rodrigo. [Risos]”

RS: And what are you preparing in terms of setlist?
RL: “We are in a 34 -year celebration where we have tried to go through the whole career, as we should launch something more specific. But for festival, we have to show what is going on now, which is the MEMORY DAILY. I believe it will intrigue the younger guy much more. It’s nice to play a song of 20 or almost 30 years ago, but we also show that we continue producing, it’s not a band that became a statue of itself. ”
RS: It’s interesting to show all periods, because there are 10 albums released. I was even impressed to realize that there are 10 albums in 34 years, a high productivity. It would be a waste to put part of it aside to focus only on the old albums, especially since you have released two very commented albums in the last six years.
RL: “I think Blind spot (2019) a very important album to this day. We would like it to be dated, but it is not. And the MEMORY DAILY It pointed a little about our skeptical bubble, because it speaks of memory, territory, childhood, military dictatorship, here and now. That is why the importance of focusing on this album for a festival. In a show of ours, there are more. ”
RS: In the past, playing earlier at festival has even been the theme of boycott of artists 20, 30 years ago. It generated a lot of debate. Today is more naturally viewed, but festivals also add some Brazilian attractions at times later as far as possible. In this edition, for example, Jão and Sepultura play later. On the artist’s side, how do you see this?
RL: “Pulling the sardines to my union: I think they respectful having artists and bands as good and big as grave and already in the so -called best time – I don’t know if I agree as much – or more full time. I am ready to play at any time, although I do not need to be so hot. I will arrive noon and I will destroy that stage: I will kick return, I will do my best, having 10 or 10 thousand people. But I think the festivals paid attention to it: respecting the relevance of the local artist and not just looking out. From our border inward, there are millions of very great things. ”
RS: Even in other recent editions this has happened. Last year, Titans closed one of the days. Also had tribalists [tocando à noite em 2019]. It has changed.
RL: “Yes. It should have changed some time ago. It also happened at Rock in Rio: When we played, the grave touched at a sensational time. It is important. And it is also important to bring younger bands. I think they are playing their role, it’s cool to curate. ”
RS: You are celebrating in a 34 -year -old tour, a “broken year”, but it has a different hook: 34 shows in 34 different cities, each with an exclusive repertoire. How did this idea come up and how is the organization?
RL: “I don’t know who had this pathetic idea of inventing 34 setlists [risos]. THE André [Pastura, empresário e produtor] It’s there, I think the idea is his. But it will be a way to instigate the band to revisit material that has not been touched for 10 years. Mainly the first three albums: Wipe (1998), Middle dream (1999) and Aphasia (2001). It is laborious, because we could stay in a structure with Blind spot, MEMORY DAILY And maybe some things from Zero and one (2004), who turned 20. But it is a way of seeking to show something different to the public – and remember. I am always for the speech, including the privileging a letter I made at 19 or 20 years old. But the instrumental guys will not always be happy, as the first album is much more straight than the eighth. Anyway, we will have a legal debate internally. It will be nice to play a like ‘I want to hear ‘Byproducts’‘, music we haven’t played for 10 or 11 years. Or ‘I want to play ‘Warm’that we played five years ago, but I want to resume. ”

RS: I believe that current formation is the most lasting Dead Fish – in a context of many changes in the past. How do you believe that Dead Fish benefits today to have a more stable training? Which do you believe is the great differential of the trio that accompanies you now?
RL: “The big difference is that they are very musicians. And they are inside our union, our Punk/Hardcore essence. Each has an influence. RIC comes with a larger influence outside the punk and hardcore, because it played in Black Mantrabesides Sugar kane. Igor Tsurumaki came from Lemon And it brings a lot of the bass of the melodic hardcore, which I personally like. And the Marcão is from the same ABC punk. It has the influence of metal, grind, crust, very heavy sounds, with more grade. I think you marry well. Changing member always bored me, although it was necessary at times, but I am very happy with this stability and because we work today a clerk. Help on the road, when composing, when setting up a setlist. Today internal political discussions are less noisy than it was 15 or 20 years ago, because we were very young and the political moment is different. It was not discussed 20 years ago a political dystopia, a left adhering deeply to enter this neo -fascism. And we have more unanimous ideas. It works to have this stability. ”
RS: Finally, you commented on a planning for a more consolidated project for next year, marking 35 years. What do you have in mind? And what is already defined?
RL: “We are working on some things to do versions of some bands, it should not go out physical, but we have already started doing some things for a new album. Although I still think that a new album for these days may not work so well, I always lose this internal discussion and we always released albums. And I wanted to do some things. I wanted to launch a book about the band, but it probably won’t happen because it’s a lot of data, a lot of people and we can’t get organized in the last four years. I would like to do a 35 -year -old tour releasing new album. I don’t know if this will be possible, but it would be quite interesting to celebrate three and a half decades with something new. ”
