Music Kisser talks to RS about Sepultura in Lolla, farewell (in stadium?) And legacy

Guitarist comments how should be a show at the Paulista Festival, anticipates the band’s final plans and reflects on artistic heritage that wants to leave

Grave node Lollapalooza Brasil 2025. Nothing to do? Andreas Kisser disagree. “Since the 1990s, we have always had alternative festivals, especially in Europe,” reflects the guitarist in chat with Rolling Stone Brazil.

Kisser, the vocalist Derrick Greenthe bassist Paulo Xisto and the drummer Greyson Nekrutman They play on the third and last day of the event – March 30, Sunday – as the final attraction of the Mike’s Ice Stage. On the same date, they present themselves Justin Timberlake, Tool, Bush, Foster The People, Parcels, King suit, Witte Charlottebetween others. Lolla takes place at the Interlagos racetrack in São Paulo on the 28th, 29th and 30th of this month. There are tickets for sale on the Ticketmaster website.

In addition to being cast for several out -of -the -year festivals over the years – Andreas quotes Dutch Pinkpop and typical events of the Spanish province Jerez de la Frontera as examples – the grave is used to occupying spaces that are not destined for gender. The guitarist, by the way, is a vocal defender of the presence of heavy music even at events like the charity Children’s Hope. And it makes sense, given the popularity of style in Brazil and in the world.

Today in the midst of a farewell tour, the group has become blessed in “extrametal” territories for their unique sound, which, since the album Arise (1991) and especially in Chaos ad (1993) and Roots (1996), began to add elements of Brazilian music. In this regard, Kisser reflects:

“I think bringing new elements to the metal opened doors to play in these festivals, where you saw few black shirts in the audience. It’s great to play for those who have never heard of the band and that, in the third song, it is enjoying it. In the United States there was still a certain paradigm, but in Europe was always very mixed. Backstage, talking and meeting people. ”

In Brazil, yet, it is not so common to see the grave at slightly more mixed festivals. When it happens, it is recurring to hear people distant from Heavy Metal comment on: “I thought it was inaudible so heavy, but it’s good.” Perhaps it is fear of such a direct name: Sepultura. Andreas reflects:

“It is difficult to generalize what is or is not the fan of the grave. If you show the Morbid Visions (1986), the Roots (1996) and the Block (2020), all this is grave. Three different people may like each one. Sepultura is the present. Therefore the importance of live experience. What is recording are records of a moment, does not mean that music is that. Music always evolves. We play ‘Kaiowas’ In many different ways and remains the same song, but with always different experiences, with the guests on stage. That’s why I don’t get sick of playing ‘Roots Bloody Roots’ throughout the show. Each show is a different experience. ”

What to expect from the grave show

As mentioned, the grave is saying goodbye to the stage. The final tour Celebrating Life Through Death It started in March 2023 after an internal drama: weeks earlier, the drummer ELOY CASAGRANDElinked to the group, had its departure confirmed suddenly and mysteriously. It would not take long for him to be announced as a new member of the Slipknot.

For his vacancy, the remnant trio brought the young man from the United States Greyson Nekrutmantoday 22 years old. Phenomenon of social networks, the drummer was notable for his various videos playing jazz and the previous work with the SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. By way of curiosity, his previous band summoned Jay Weinberg… Who had been fired from Slipknot, where Casagrande is. Chairs Dance – Or rather, drums.

Greyson Nekrutman, Bespultura drummer

Since then, many fans from Brazil and the world have been able to watch the show Celebrating Life Through Deatheven in longer duration, since the band has performed several presentations as the main attraction. For Lolla, however, the format will be a little reduced – an hour long – and the repertoire should not have so many surprises. Andreas Kisser points out that it could be “a little different, but without escaping much” from what they performed on the 16th at the Mexican festival Latin Live.

There, being more accurate, they played: “Refus/resist”; “Territoritory”; “Kairos”; “Phantom Self”; “Attitude”; “Means to an end”; “Escape to the void”; “Dead Embryonic Cells”; “Agony of Defeat”; “Arise”; “Ratamahatta”; “Roots Bloody Roots”. The guitarist comments:

“There is always something different, but within what we have. We are rehearsing more music of the repertoire with Greyson, because we are recording a live album, so we have to have more possibilities for tracks and places. There will be 40 songs recorded in 40 different cities. The show will be a little more compact than we usually do as a headliner.

A year of farewell – and Grayson Nekrutman

It doesn’t even look like, but the grave farewell tour completed a year earlier this month. The inaugural presentation in Belo Horizonte, the city’s foundation city, was also marked by the debut of Greyson Nekrutman with an easy task, in view of the group’s legacy regarding the drums.

Andreas Kisser points out that, in this first year, the Celebrating Life Through Death he was “Perfect, the way imagined and planned to celebrate positively, without melancholy, just with thanks to the fans”. Regarding the new member, the guitarist says:

“Greyson is fantastic. Light, light, open, with absurd talent and a spectacular family. In front of a bushing, he killed his chest and kicked in the angle. Naturally transpires to the audience. No wonder, already in Belo Horizonte the crowd began to shout ‘Grayson, Grayson’, which became a constant. to have connection with spectacular drummers. IGGOR CAVALERA It showed this ‘grave path’ of being, composing and playing drums, we only had monsters. There is no way to have less. It was fantastic to have put the world map the Jean DolabellaEloy Casagrande and now Greyson. ”

Future of the grave, both active and inactive

It is not yet known exactly when the Celebrating Life Through Death It will end. The plan, according to Andreas Kisser, is to follow up until 2026, when there will be a final presentation in Sao Paulo, with the right to invite former members.

When it comes to the state capital, the band has already held three crowded performances in the Unimed space last September, bringing together approximately 24,000 fans. The guitarist admits that he becomes natural, therefore, to think of a stadium to receive the last show.

“The intention is to do [o show final] In a stadium, no doubt. It’s the band’s last show. Let’s invite bands that are part of this story, all former member, friends, have a party. I think it’s a unique career. Forty years of history, it will be 42 when we have this party next year. You have to celebrate. We created the grave and this song in our country, Brazil, with its pros and cons. So we want to have a big party for every fan of all over Brazil and even abroad: many from Europe are already programming to participate. ”

According to Kisser, the grave represents “an open door from Brazil to the world.” To mourn, just the fact that Heavy Metal does not have due recognition in the country.

“It is an open door from Brazil to the world, a Brazilian cultural symbol that, unfortunately, does not have the recognition here within this country, as a cultural aspect, Heavy Metal. It is the country that loves heavy metal in the world. Not for nothing, every band of the world circuit comes here, touches large places, records DVDs and live albums.”

After the last presentation, the grave continues, but with his work. And what kind of legacy Andreas Kisser would like to leave from the moment the band closes the activities? In a long answer to be kept in full, he says:

“That anything is possible, even within an impossible dream, which was the grave in 1984, even the history we built, putting Brazil on the metal world map. Believing yourself, focusing, preparing. The grave rehearsed every day, since I entered in 1987. Until before, they had this discipline, rehearsing every day, composing, listening to new things.
And be authentic with yourself. From the moment you start losing a certain focus or identity, you will want to make music for radio, you will want to wear a certain look because you are fashionable, or will get lost in the way. Many artists get lost because they want to please the fan, the label, the radio, they get lost. We were always very safe in what we wanted, we always fight for artistic freedom, to make our music, choose our art for the album. And here we are.
It is very cool to listen for example the Juanesa great Colombian artist, who saw in the rise of the grave outside Latin America the possibility of him doing that too. It’s f#listening to such a business. Argentines, Colombians, Chileans say: ‘This band is not only Brazilian, it is South American’. It is a pioneering spirit not only Brazilian but South American. This has a spectacular power of influence, motivation… to make the crowd take the instrument, make a sound and turn their own dream into reality. I think it’s a legacy that shows how, regardless of the musical style or even the profession you follow, get ready: study, respect yourself, give yourself the chance to look at the challenges in the best way possible. ”
