Although it was not successful in the 1990s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers experienced high and downstreams in the period in question. Soon after reaching a massive level of success with the album BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK (1991), the group lost the guitarist Fuscian Johnat the time suffering from chemical dependence. It took a long time before they found a replacement in Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction), but this one also faced its own demons and the only album with the musician in question, One Hot Minute (1995), did not repeat the success of the predecessor.

Frusciante eventually returned in 1998 in a process that also involved his rehabilitation after reaching the bottom of the well. The meeting was consecrated with the album CALIFORNATION (1999), responsible for even overcoming the commercial success of BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK. End of confusion, beginning of an era of peace. Right?

It was not quite like that. When the group decided to conceive the next album, By the way (2002), tensions have returned so strongly to the point that Flea considered abandoning colleagues. The bassist and founding member of RHCP seriously thought of devoting himself only to his music conservatory in California, becoming a teacher of the various instruments he plays.

The conflict occurred because, in By the wayJohn Frusciante took the lead in creative terms. Their more melodic compositions – and with different influences from characteristic funk rock – gained support from the producer Rick Rubin and, consequently, space in the repertoire. Excited, the guitarist even made up lines to Flea, who didn’t like it at all.

In an interview of 2006 to Guitar world (via Far Out), the real name musician Michael Peter Balzary admitted:

“I was sure I would fall out. I was like, ‘I’m sick. This is no longer fun for me. This is no longer a place for me to express myself.’

On another occasion, the bassist complemented: “I really didn’t feel comfortable being myself, so I kind of walked away [do processo criativo]”.

In the same year, Q Magazine (via Igor Miranda website), Flea elaborated a little more about the situation. He stated:

“John went to this other art level. But he made me feel like I had nothing to offer, as if I didn’t know at all.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers, by the way and future

Despite the conflict – strictly creative and later solved with a frank conversation – Flea remained in training and By the way It was launched on July 9, 2022 under great public and critical reception. Although it did not repeat the overwhelming numbers of CALIFORNATIONthe eighth studio album of the Californian quartet earned them the second position in the US chart, the highest number they had reached so far.

The material yielded five singles: a title track, “The Zephyr Song”, “Can’t Stop”, “Dosed” and “Universally Speaking”. Of these, the first stood out, responsible for reaching the vice-leadership of the British parade, and the third, now certified with quadruple platinum disk by the 4 million copies sold.

Overcome the dilemma, peace in the production of the next album, Stadium Arcadium (2006), correct? In a way, yes. But in 2009, after the tour of the album in question, Frusciante left the band for the second time. Was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer Until you return a decade later – it seems now, now in a scenario of tranquility.
