In this sense, 60 years ago, the British boys fans of the American blues formed the band that would be one of the most important of the British Invasion.
As a result, there are more than 250 million albums sold, profitable tours, and a record audience here in Brazil. No wonder such an energetic band has been rolling the stones all these years, remaining active to this day.
Will you come with us to take a look at extraordinary moments from the journey of these rock icons?
The history of the Rolling Stones
Translating all the intensity of the Rolling Stones story may seem like an almost impossible mission. That’s why we’ve separated a few moments for you to immerse yourself in the essence of the band’s 60 years!
The beginning of the band and the discovery of their identity
First of all, it was a reunion of childhood friends interested in rock and roll that the Stones emerged. Like this, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were invited by Brian Jones to form an R&B band outside America.
Along with Brian, pianist Ian Stewart even recorded with the band, even without pretending to be a member. In addition to that, Charlie Watts would hire the drums to dominate it with class and chivalry, a hallmark of his personality.
Hence, this talent pool was seen by the press officer of the Beatles,! Thus, in 1964, the band’s first album conquered the world and, although poorly recorded, sold 100,000 units in the first week.
You can already understand what was going to happen, right? Here, in fact, the story of the Rolling Stones in the charts began, marked by customized products, concerts and delirious teenagers.
Despite the success of his debut album, it was only in 1965 that his biggest blow came to life: (I can’t get no) Satisfactionin the album Out of our heads.
After gaining trust, they flirted with the psychedelic rock and, along with that, equally stunning drugs. Then they produced other hits, like Jumping Jack Flash.
However, it was during this time, in 1969, that Brian Jones was fired from the band, due to disagreements with other members of the group. He was replaced by Mick Taylor. However, the founder of the Rolling Stones was found dead in his swimming pool a few days after his departure.
And the tragedies didn’t end there. In the same year four people died in one of his concerts, victims of the assault due to the safety of the events.
The 70s: logo and exile
After joining the Atlantic Records label, the band had the chance to have their own label. And who doesn’t know mouth with tongue outit is not?
The logo was first used on the album cover Sticky fingers1971, famous for its iconic zip cover.

Since it is a piece totally linked to the concept of “pop art”, many people believe that the creator of this work was the legendary Andy Warhol. However, the image was taken by John Pasche, an art student at the Royal College of Art, College of London.
In 1969, Jagger asked the artist to come up with a new work of art, as Decca Records’ previous suggestions had not been approved.
Years after its creation, the logo brought the Stones solidification of the brand and thousands of dollars from selling licensed products.
It was around this same time that the gang stayed in a mansion in the south of France, at the expense of stratospheric tax debts. This period of self-exile led to the iconic Exile in Main St.one of albums that turn 50 in 2022.
As a result, they went on tour and settled accounts on the queen’s land, but Keith and his wife were charged with drug trafficking. Then the period of rehabilitation arrived and also the double album, considered by many to be the most coherent and versatile of the band.
The following years were marked by the departure of Mick Taylor, who pursued a solo career, the entry of Ron Wood as a second guitar and the release of other albums.
The Stones discography mixes intimate records, with guests like Billy Prestonmore punk works – Some girlsfor example – and commercial successes, as is the case with start me.
1980s, 90s and 2000s
The remainder of the 1980s and 1990s was marked by rumors of separations, disagreements and speculation, all of which helped boost its sales even further.
Following the momentum, in the 2000s, the Stones introduced their fans to giant structures, extended tours and more root-oriented albums.
The following years consecrated them with films shown in cinemasparticipation to guitar herotributes to Maroon 5 and more.
The loss of Charlie Watts
Charlie Watts’ legacy deserves a separate text, for his mastery in front of the drums of one of the most iconic bands of recent times.
Fans were looking forward to the resumption of the post-pandemic shows, until they stumbled upon the news of their loss. In this sense, not only the band regretted his departure, but all the fans and the world of music.
Charlie Watts made his mark as a man discreet and talented. In addition, he became known as a drummer of his own identity, with dry rhythms and “cracking” on the snare drum, marked tempos, etc. The musician died at the age of 80 in London.
Rolling Stones and Brazil: a fruitful love
Although the band began its activity in 1962, the history of the Rolling Stones in Brazil only began in the 1990s. Before that, the musicians had set foot on Brazilian soil as mere tourists.
In this way, the quiet has given way to the harassment of the press and fans. As a result, inspiration for the rhythm of Sympathy for the devil.
Despite that, the first Rolling Stones concert in Brazil took place at Pacaembuon a rainy night in 1995. It was the first of a tour that would extend to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with the right to Overture by Red Baron, Rita Lee and Spin Doctors.
Subsequently, the band returned in 1998, when they sang their verses in Ibirapuera, in Sao Paulo, and in Praça da Apoteose, in Rio.
It was on the eve of these shows that Mick Jagger met the then model Luciana Gimenez, with whom he had his seventh son, Lucas. In 2006, without having to prove anything to anyone else, the band played to 1.5 million people on Copacabana beach.
Finally, the last visit of the British to Brazil dates back to 2016, when the band visited the capitals of Rio, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Thus, in each city, the Rolling Stones received a different opening, due to Titãs, Cachorro Grande and Ultraje in Rigor.
The relationship with Brazil does not stop there! In 2019 they released the remix of Living in a ghost townsigned by Alok, as well as the single I have to take a hold.
The eternal heritage of stones
However the fact is that the musicality proposed by the Stones during these 60 years of the band had the power to influence practically everything that came after.
In this sense, without them it is possible that bands like Aerosmith, AC / DC, Guns N ‘Roses, Barão Vermelho, The Hives and thousands of others would not have their own sounds.
This feat is celebrated not only here at the Cifra Club, but also in the documentary My Rolling Stones lifewhich will be released in August.
