After leading the ranking of the most loved dog breeds in Brazil, according to a DogHero survey, it’s only fair that bastards have a day to call themselves, right? Therefore, today, Mutt Day is celebrated on July 31st!

And this fame is not for nothing, see? According to a survey by the Qualibest Institute, in 2019 40% of the dogs in Brazilian homes were mixed breed (SRD). Therefore, the commemorative date is also a reminder encourage the adoption and appreciation of non-purebred animalslike cats and dogs.

After all, who are the bastards?

According to veterinarian Farah de Andrade, mixed-breed animals are, in fact, mestizos, that is, they come from the mixture of two or more breeds. In this, both the dog and the cat adapt to the fact that it is no longer possible to identify which crosses have been made, as well as the intentional fusion of two breeds, as in the case of the “Labradoodle”, a mixture of Labrador and Poodle.

That they are loved and popular in Brazil, we already know, right? But to celebrate Mutt’s Day, the vet has listed some curious and important facts about the health and personality of these animals. Look that:

• They are more resistant to genetic diseases: SRD dogs and cats come from a mix of genes and the higher the number, the less genetic load they will inherit. Therefore, they may be more resistant to genetic diseases, but that doesn’t mean they are immune to it, nor to others, so consultations and vaccination are essential!

• The nickname comes from a sad reality: the name “bastard” was given for the behavior of these animals in the streets, where they usually take or turn the garbage cans to feed and survive;

• Uniqueness in the biotype: mixes of breeds also affect the physical appearance of these pets, making each one unique;

• Personality and context: just like the physique, the personality also varies a lot depending on the breeds involved, however, the context of that animal will also determine its behaviors, see?
