The Brazilian DJ played on the Sahara tent with 50 Urban Theory dancers and received Ava Max for a two songs
Alok It is not strange to the use of technology in its futuristic shows around the world, but in Coachellahe placed the spotlight on the power of the human collective. On Saturday night, the Brazilian star made a mesmerizing set on stage Saharaaccompanied by 50 group dancers Urban Theory.
“We are discussing in the world how artificial intelligence is dominating everything, even the arts,” he said Alok the Rolling Stone about your performance. “How can we keep human art? Because art needs soul. I know that robots and Ia Can you do things based on what they have learned, but do they have soul to create real art? I think art needs soul. “
Alok was accompanied by a group of 50 dancers from the collective Urban Theorydressed like robots, silver clothes and metal gloves, making manual choreography so soft that they seemed almost automated. The screens showed the message: “This is not Ia. ”
One of the most impactful moments of the show was inspired by the environment – a cause that Alok It defends with Brazilian indigenous activists in the Amazon, collecting thousands of dollars to combat climate change. The movements of the dancers became a huge tree and psychedelic waves breaking. This part also refers to your NGO The Future is ancestralan initiative celebrated by UNESCOdedicated to amplifying the voices of indigenous peoples in the world.
The Cabin of DJ of Alok It was supported by two giant silver hands, who accompany him throughout his career. But on Saturday night they represented “a powerful symbol about the energy and power humans have to create.” The presentation in Coachella will be an even larger platform for the artist, who is already global and made history as nominated twice in the first edition of the category of Best Latin Electronic Music Performance node Latin Grammy.
“We need to be connected at this time of transformation,” he says Alok. “I think this is the message of the show: inspiring people through art to connect, to be in tune, to face this moment as a collective.”
The Brazilian star guides us by his set and talks about preparing the surprise participation of AVA MAX.
Talk about your creative process for this set.
This idea came from the creative director Fabio [Soares]which was extraordinary. It was a challenge because we were going to Coachella for the first time, but we couldn’t use drones, lasers. It is a place where it is very important that the artist position himself in the market on his own. We wanted to prepare something special.
It was funny because when we posted the promotional video, a lot of people said, “Ah, that’s going.” It is not AI. It’s crazy to see how AI dominated everything. In the end, the message I want to pass on to everyone is: Keep human art.
In its space, where technology is highlighted, why is it important to highlight the power of humans?
I think technology is a very important tool we have, but we can’t allow it to control us. We are living a very challenging moment now. Technology benefits us in many ways, but it is also very important to understand that humans cannot be replaced. Of course, we need to adapt to changes in the world, but there are things that need the human soul.
How do you see these changes happening?
You know, everything we are discussing now will be totally different in six months or a year. Everything is changing very fast. And as everything goes quickly, it is also important to try to prevent the AI simply dominate everything.
What do you expect people to take from your presentation as a whole?
Nowadays, everything is AI, and now we have a great opportunity to do something that is not – and that is still amazing. I was always very focused on technology, and then I started talking about protecting nature. And then people asked, “But why technology?” In fact, it is for the same reason. I can say with confidence that with everything we have of technology, there are still things that cannot be replaced. This is my position. I feel that we are also learning from this process.
As artists, we have the responsibility to boost culture. Coachella is this great moment, a huge platform, and also a space where we need to try to take the culture forward and position it. I wouldn’t be pleased to just be there and do a normal show. I am very proud of the message we have gone through, because we are all discussing the importance of humans being connected in the same tune.
You are one of the two Brazilians on the line-up this year, after Anitta’s departure. What is it like to be one of the few representing Brazil?
Well, to be honest, it doesn’t make me proud because last year we had more Brazilians. In fact, it’s a setback, but at least I’m there. I would like us to have more. In Brazil, Coachella is super famous, everyone loves to follow and watch. Glastonbury? No one knows what it is. But Coachella is super popular. I feel that Brazilians are very proud of it.
You will bring Ava Max to the stage. How is your relationship with her and why did you decide to take her to this presentation?
This happened last week, in fact, a few days ago. I had to redo my set to include it. I found it important to put two songs. One will be “Sweet But Psycho”, but it is a new version that I made for the audience to recognize who is on stage. The second will be “Car Keys”, my song with her. It is a track that works super well in the electronic music scene. It’s my first time at Coachella. I’ve never been there. For me, it is also a very new and exciting experience. I am very anxious.
What was it like to work with Urban Theory?
All of this is new to them too. It’s a dream for them. It is a collective dream. This is how we could make it happen. Otherwise, it would not have been possible.
Is there anyone who are excited to see at Coachella this year?
I would love to see Green Day, Travis Scott, Keinemusik and next Saturday Ed Sheeran as well. It has many legal names. We have two weekends to enjoy. The whole family is in La now. Let’s spend a whole month there. They are super happy to be here.
