Musicpions celebrate 60 years of career with tour in Brazil: ‘It’s impressive how time flies’

German band returns to the country with shows in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio to celebrate six decades of road and 40 years of Rock in Rio

You Scorpions They are back in Brazil. The German band, which participated in the first edition of Rock in Rio, in 1985, this week makes three performances in the country: in Brasilia (16), São Paulo (at Monsters of Rock, the 19th) and Rio de Janeiro (in the country, the 21st). The ticket marks not only the 40th anniversary of the Rio de Janeiro festival, but also the 60th anniversary of the band’s foundation and the 40th anniversary of the album Love at First Sting (1984), one of the most successful of the group’s career.

In an interview with the newspaper The globeby Zoom, directly from a studio in Hanover, Germany, the members recalled the impact of playing in the first Rock in Rio.

“It was historic! These are memories that will be with us forever, those shows in the summer of Rio and bands like Queen and AC/DC on the same stage as us,” said vocalist Klaus Meine, 76. “We love to go back to the festival in 2019 and see that it follows firm and strong. But that first edition was unforgettable.”

The guitarist Rudolph Schenkeralso 76, he founded the Scorpions in Hanover still in his teens. He recalls the beginning of the band, the development of guitar -based sound and the influence of British idols like Beatles,The Who, Rolling Stones and LED ZEPPELIN:

“We made guitar -based music and composing in English, even without mastering the tongue well,” said Klaus.

Over the years, the group has undergone several formations – among them, the presence of Michael SchenkerRudolph’s brother – until consolidating his world success in the late 1970s with albums like Lovedrive (1979), Animal magnetism (1980), Blackout (1982) and Love at First Sting.

The 1984 album is remembered especially by hits as “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and “Still Loving You”the latter with letter ofKlaus Meine and melody composed of Rudolph Schenker:

“I had already made the song about seven years earlier, and no one in the band was a shit,” said Rudolph, laughing. “One day, in a rehearsal, I started playing the fingering. The drummer came in and finally the band agreed to record. Sometimes it is necessary to have patience. The lyrics already said: ‘Time, It Needs Time’.”

“Still Loving You” gained popularity in Brazil after entering the soap opera soundtrack Meleefrom TV Globo, and it was already a success in 1985, the year the Scorpions played at Rock in Rio.

After a break for the drummer’s health reasons Mikkey Deethe Scorpions resumed the concert schedule. In June, they start a new tour of Europe and in August, they debut a season of five performances in Las Vegason the Planet Hollywood.

“He had a sepsis, serious thing, but it’s fine,” said guitarist Matthias Jabs. “In February I was recovering in Sweden and now has returned to the road.”

The current tour celebrates six decades of road and there is no retirement forecast, although a “farewell” was considered on the album Sting in the tail (2010):

It was 15 years ago, we forgot! Our Brazilian fans would not leave”, Joked Rudolph Schenker.
