pointed stick follows the story of a 26-year-old nanny, Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth), who begins a relationship with her married employer, Josh, played by Jon Bernthal. I had the privilege of speaking to Dunham before the movie was released. , where he talks about his collaboration with Bernthal. As he shared,
I wrote the role for him. We met and quickly became friends. I knew I was desperate to do something with him and wrote this part with him in mind. I sent it to him knowing that he is incredibly busy and has a million offers. And it might not be his bag to show up for a week and play this guy. And literally from day one, he said, “I’m in.” Whatever. I’m here to support you. He offered him his advice, he offered him his notes. But what was so beautiful was the warning that he was always there to give the vision and not to take it away.

He plays a lot of interesting characters and they are often tough, intense, powerful and scary. And it’s great to see him play this guy who is almost emasculated and plays a minor role in his life. One of the reasons he is so interested in Sarah Jo is because he can play an important role in her life.
The dynamics of power and status are certainly what makes the plot of this story so interesting all over. pointed stickDuration 85 minutes. Eventually, it all overflows (as many adventures do) when Lena Dunham’s character, Heather, goes into labor. The whole truth comes out in the explosive scene, in which Jon Bernthal becomes hysterical as he asks for forgiveness. But Dunham revealed that the emotional reaction wasn’t actually in the script, saying:
It wasn’t in the script that I was about to start crying hysterically. She had a more defensive tone. And he said to me, ‘I think this is the guy who, without even knowing that he’s manipulating people, starts crying when he’s caught doing stupid things.’ And he showed those amazing layers that he’s a character who is scared and hurt, but he also uses it to show his domination of him. And he acts like a loser in order not to feel like an oppressor.
This sequence is awkward, hilarious and thrilling in typical Lena Dunham way. And it looks like it was really enhanced by Jon Bernthal’s intended interpretation of the material. From his acting to her work as a producer, he appears to have been a great collaborator for Dunham to work with upon her return as a feature film director.
