Nana was hospitalized at the San José clinic in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, since July last year to treat cardiac arrhythmia. In the period hospitalized, he underwent surgery to implement a pacemaker.

Nana was married to the Venezuelan doctor Gilberto José Point Paoli, with whom he had three children, Stella Teresa, Denise Maria and João Gilberto.
