Musician rejects romanticization of the decade that originated the Hawaii engineers and other BR rock bands: “perhaps it was an illusion”
Although the 1980s have gestated Hawaii engineers and several of the main bands of Brazilian rock, Humberto Gessinger avoids romanticize that period.
The gaucho musician says he is happy with his current moment, focused on the solo career. For him, even if the 1980s was, in theory, more fruitful for style and enabled the emergence of other names as Urban Legion, Titans, The Paralamas of Success and Red baronit does not necessarily mean that it was a sea of roses.
At 61, the singer and songwriter proves to be resigned to the current predominance of styles such as funk and backcountry on the charts and minimizes, in an interview with Gabriel Zorzetto for the Estadãothe importance of the commercial aspect of music.
“Maybe Brazil is this, right? Maybe it was an illusion another type of illuminating music. I have several questions about the commercial side, but if we were in the 80s, my first album would not be available, I would be out of catalog, but today it is there, accessible. I never wanted to be part of anything hegemonic. The 80’s. I don’t have the slightest longing at that time. ”
Humberto says he has already received several companies from companies proposing a return from Hawaii engineers with the original members – he, Augusto Licks (guitarist) and Carlos Maltz (drummer) – In the way, for example, what the titans did. However, any possibility of accepting these offers is discarded.
“Yes, there were several of these companies that have contacted. Festivals too. But I’m so happy with what I’m doing and the size I have now. I think the kids (Carlos and Augusto) understand that too. I am honored that they miss, but I do not have. For me to get a cage, where they are giving me water. It’s not my size. I studied architecture, I set up a band, I made my way, I write my complicated lyrics, I don’t know who understands it, I mean, nothing against those who crowd, but this is not my game. ”
