Serj Tankian recalls an episode in which he had to be more energetic to try to gain some respect for the “Slaytanic Wehrmacht”

THE system of a Down found a hostile atmosphere when touring with the Slayerin 1998. Still beginner and with just one album released, the band passed few and good opening to one of the biggest names in metal, in general, and Thrash Metal, in particular.

SERJ TANKIAN told some of these situations (via Metal injection) In your memories book, Down with the system (2024). The singer recalled, for example, the episode in which he was hit by a Bagel (a type of bread) thrown by a Slayer fan.

“We were on stage in Poland and being hit with currencies by fans who also did Nazi greetings toward us. At one point, I took a bagel on my face and lost my head.”

According to the singer, it was necessary to act energetically to gain some kind of respect before the “Slaytanic Wehrmacht” – How is the most radical wing of Slayer fan. He narrated:

“I asked our illuminator to point the lights to the audience and aim at the” shooter “of Bagels. So I started talking angrily and threatened to kick people’s ass. When I finished, the place was absolutely silent. I could literally hear a pin falling into that place. Then we left.”

System of a Down learned from the Slayer audience

Serj Tankian, however, considers this time as a period of learning for the System of a Down. In an interview with Podcast BROKEN RECORD (via Ultimate Guitar), the vocalist emphasizes the fanaticism of the public of Slayer and says he took lessons from that:

“We have done Slayer opening tour for a year, so you integrate, learn the lessons. It was like a training camp for us. They had very dedicated fans that, you know, would use a knife to tattoo Slayer on their arm. You need to know how to fade, scream and shout, use your authority and learn to control the audience.”
