Platform states that it has never used artists content to train AI models, despite a controversial clause in their updated terms of use

THE Soundcloud officially commented after an article published by the site Futurism Get attention to a controversial clause in its terms of use, which would allow the use of music sent by users as training data for Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The clause in question, added in the February 2024 update, states:

In the absence of a separate agreement that says otherwise, you [usuário] Explicitly agree that its content can be used to inform, train, develop or serve as an input for artificial intelligence technologies or services or machine intelligence as part of the service provision. ”

Given the repercussion, representatives of the Soundcloud sent a statement to Pitchfork denying that the platform content is being used for this purpose. The note says:

THE Soundcloud It has never used artists content to train AI models, nor have we developed AI tools or allowing third parties to scrap or use the content of our platform for AI training purposes. ”

The company has mentioned other artificial intelligence applications in its system, such as personalized recommendations, content organization, fraud detection, and improvements in track identification, as well as technical measures to avoid unauthorized use of data.

However, the statement does not respond directly if the Soundcloud or not intends to use music from the platform as data for AI training in the future.

Soundcloud positioning on AI use:

Soundcloud has always been – and will remain – a platform centered on artists. Our commitment is to offer control, transparency and real opportunities for artists to grow. We believe that artificial intelligence, when developed responsibly, can expand creative potential – especially when guided by principles such as consent, attribution, and fair compensation.

We stressed that SoundCloud has never used artists content to train AI models, nor do we develop general AI tools, nor allow third parties to scrap or use the content of our platform for this purpose. We even implemented technical protection measures, such as the “no AI” tag, which explicitly prohibits unauthorized use.

Updating our Terms of Service in February 2024 aimed to clarify how content can interact with AI technologies within the SoundCloud platform itself. These uses involve personalized recommendations, content organization, fraud detection and improvements in track identification.

Any future AI application in SoundCloud will be thought to support human artists, expanding their tools, reach and possibilities within the platform. This includes improvements in musical recommendations, playlist generation and discovery of new talents, always respecting licensing agreements and ethical standards. Tools such as music are used exclusively to discover artists and content organization – not to train Generative AI models.

We understand the concerns raised and continue open to the dialogue. The artists will continue to have control over their works, and we will keep our community informed with each step, as we exploit innovations and apply AI technologies responsibly – especially in a constantly evolving legal and commercial scenario.
