Gaza’s war cannot be resolved by military means, says the German minister

The conflict in Gaza cannot be resolved by military means and a political solution must be found to end the war permanently, said Germany Minister Johann Wadephul on Sunday in Jerusalem.

“I don’t think this conflict can be resolved permanently with military means,” said Wadephul. “However, it is urgently necessary that Hamas will be unarmed and that he can no longer have military control over Gaza.”

He also said that Germany would do everything you need to guarantee Israel’s security, but this does not mean that its country cannot criticize Israeli actions, although “it should not lead to antimitism”.

The attacks of Hamas on October 7, 2023 killed 1,200 people and another 251 were brought hostage to Gaza, according to Israel. The Israeli campaign killed over 52,000 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to the health authorities managed by Hamas.

“I am not sure if all Israel’s strategic objectives can be achieved in this way (through a military campaign) and if this will serve the safety of Israel long -term,” said Wadephul. “That’s why appeal to the return of serious negotiations on a ceasefire.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that only Hamas was responsible for war. This cannot continue, he said. “Hamas must be defeated.”

Saar and Wadephul have also welcomed a new American proposal to distribute the aid in the Gaza Strip.

The residents of Gaza face possible hunger, says the United Nations, with Israel imposes a lock of months to help with the Palestinian enclave and promising to expand his military campaign against Hamas after breaking a respite in March.

The Tikva Forum, an extremist Israeli group that represents some hostage relatives, has criticized the plan, stating that the help of help should be conditioned by the release of the 59 prisoners to Gaza da Hamas.

Wadephul repeated that the return of the hostages is the priority of the German government.

He also said it was clear that Gaza is part of the Palestinian territory. “We need a political solution for the reconstruction of Gaza without Hamas,” said Wadephul.

After meeting Saar, Wadephul will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

A meeting with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Mohammed Mustafa is scheduled for subsequent to Ramallah, West Bank.
