“I will do everything in my power to honor The Who, Zak, Kenney Jones, Simon Phillips and the memory of the great Keith Moon,” says Scott Devrs
Scott Devrslongtime drummer of the solo band of Roger Daltrey – Recently promoted to The Who after a very bitter and prolonged separation with Zak Starkey – shared emotional thoughts about his new position on Instagram.
He wrote:
“Yesterday, with a simple and short post on Instagram, Pete [Townshend] And Roger, once again, changed my life forever. It’s hard to express the tsunami of emotions I’ve been processing since this amazing news. The amount of positivity I received has been overwhelming – I thank you all. And please don’t ask me tickets, lol. ”
He also acknowledged that many longtime fans are “devastated” with Starkey’s departure-who, off the break, was the drummer who remained in the group in history-and would have difficulty accepting him.
The musician continued:
“As a great fan I am, there is a part of me that is also dealing with this loss with a heavy heart. It is really a strange contradiction of emotions: having the greatest moment of my professional career is also one that carries a certain sadness and is shaded for the loss of someone else. It’s hard to put it into words, but I know it’s there and it’s real.”
The Who Demite Zak Starkey
The Who initially announced Zak Starkey’s departure from the band on April 16, allegedly because they are dissatisfied with their performance at Royal Albert Hall the previous month.
The drummer said in a statement:
“After playing these songs with the band for so many decades, I was surprised and sad that someone had problems with my performance that night. But what can you do?”
Three days later, he was readmitted. “We are a family, it came out of control very fast and received too much attention”wrote Pete Townshend to the fans. “It’s over. Now we move on with optimism and fire in the soul.”
This new spirit of optimism and enthusiasm lasted until last Sunday, 18, when Starkey was again fired. Townshend wrote to the fans:
“After many years of great work on Zak’s drums, it’s time for a change. It’s a delicate time. Zak has a lot of new projects ongoing and wish him the best.”
Starkey did not receive the news in silence and wrote:
“I was fired two weeks after the readmission and asked me to make a statement saying I left The Who to follow other musical projects – that would be a lie. I love The Who and I would never have left on my own. So, I did not make the WHO would have been hurt all the amazing people who supported me (thanks to all, one million times and more) And leaves, enters and goes like a wretched accordion. ‘
Scott Devrs Hired
These, clearly, are not the ideal circumstances for Scott Devrs to take over the band’s drums – and he is fully aware of it. In his letter, he simply asks The Who fans to give him a chance. Devrs had already played briefly with the band in 2013, when Starkey recovered from an injury.
He still wrote:
“In my world, there is no greater responsibility than being behind Pete and Roger. The weight of this responsibility is huge, and I’m feeling every grass of it. What I mean to all the fans is that I will do everything I can to honor The Who, Zak, Zak’s legacy, Kenney Jones, Simon Phillips and the memory of the great Keith Moon. Having my name not even mentioned in a phrase like this literally causes me goose bumps and I know I need to conquer this honor. As this will be Pete’s last tour and Roger in the United States, playing the greatest songs ever composed, I will give them every second of my time, every beat of my heart and every drop of my sweat and blood. This is my ultimate goal. ”
He concludes:
“But this tour is not about me or anyone other than The Who, which are Pete and Roger. I will give everything I have to them, and the rest will soon be history … Thanks for reading it. Now I’ll vomit there, lol.”
