Singer talked about artistic identity, creation of the new album and reflected on the impact of her previous album
Lord stated that his album Solar power(2021) does not reflect who she is artistically. In an interview with Podcast Therapuss with Jake Shanethe singer talked about the process of creating the album and how he helped her rediscover her identity.
“I love Solar power And really needed to make this album. I wouldn’t be here with a new album if I hadn’t done Solar power. But he showed me that you have no choice but to be who you really are, ”he said.
“Hide and become all ethereal … I thought, ‘In fact, I don’t think this is me.”
The album, with lighter sound and acoustic influences, came after the exhaustive tour of Melodrama (2017), which Lord described as intense:
“It was very crazy to do the tour Melodrama. I found everything very intense, every night that very loaded music environment. I just wanted something light and easy after that. It was cool. ”
In an interview prior to Rolling StoneLord – whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor – He explained that the album was also inspired by a trip to Antarctica, where he had contact with climate change research and even observed helicopter whales. The experience pushed her away from digital culture and net pressure:
“I came back with the certainty that my focus needed to be in the outside world. It was something much more fascinating than my cell phone, celebrity culture or pop culture had become to me.”
“One of the things that start to happen when you have a community is that you move as one, in a way. I honestly I don’t think I could do it four years ago – it was like being in a whirlwind.”
Lord now prepares to release his new album, Virginscheduled for June 27. The work has already been presented with the singles “Man of the Year” and “What was that that”and will explore topics such as gender identity, eating disorders and artistic rebirth.
“My gender identity became much more expansive when I gave more space to my body,” he said.
“Some days I’m a woman, others I’m a man. I know it’s not a very satisfactory answer, but there is a part of me that resists fitting it into a box.”
