Bullet Train: How super-tight spaces contributed to the fierce fight scenes in the new action movie

While certainly more spacious than airplanes, the average train isn’t exactly a vehicle that offers a lot of space for passengers. Benches and seating are arranged to maximize the number of people who can travel at the same time, and extras like tables don’t really help. For this it may not be considered the ideal setting for a great action movie with characters fighting endlessly, but the protagonists of David Leitch’s film High speed train they would disagree, arguing that limited space is an important part of what enhances the enjoyment of the movie.

As captured in the video at the beginning of this article, I interviewed High speed train with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada and Brad Pitt at the end of last month at the virtual press day for the new film, and one question I asked everyone was: how to make the crazy action that the film required. small spaces. Taylor-Johnson explained that he thinks that not having much space to work in is an advantage for the job, as the constraints of the environment require creative solutions. the actor said

I think these kinds of additions, actually. I like it when there are limits and limitations, because then you use the environment and around you, and I think that’s what we did. And I think David Leitch wanted us to build on that, I think, and then add layers.

The film is based on the book. beetle maria by Kōtarō Isaka, and his main group are all assassins, hit men and murderers who board a bullet train in Tokyo bound for Kyoto. Each of the characters has their own motivations and goals for being on the high-speed train and very often intersections lead to conflicts and violent confrontations.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson cited an example in High speed train with Brad Pitt and Brian Tyree Henry facing off in the silent car of the titular transport, noting that the limits have improved both the action and the comedy:

I mean, these two have had an incredible series of fights in a tight space against each other around the table, but in a quiet car. And then it adds another element, so they have to keep everything quiet. This action comedy is a good balance.

Joking with his co-star, Brian Tyree Henry noted that some interesting chemistry has occurred due to the limited space and the fact that Brad Pitt is apparently not one to deal with limits. He said laughing,

When you can work within boundaries and then work with someone who loves Brad [Pitt], who doesn’t respect borders, creates all this kind of extraordinary visual element, like a kamikaze, you know what I mean? You’re really trying to figure out how to work within the confines of fighting on a train and killing someone with a tray and kicking someone’s butt with an armrest.

Playing The Elder, a character who makes a big entrance into the film at the end of the second act, Hiroyuki Sanada didn’t spend as much time on the bullet train as his co-stars, but he certainly had his experience with spaces and was impressed by the work of director David Leitch in space. Sanada said,

Sometimes [it’s] difficult as it was very tight and there were many people on the train but it was fun and easy for me to check in with the specialists and coordinator. And above all the director David [Leitch] he knows the action very well, therefore [it’s] easy to control, then easily create the unique interesting choreography together. I enjoyed myself so much every day on the set.

The sentiment about working with David Leitch was also echoed by Brian Tyree Henry. He explained that there were moments on set where he wasn’t sure how certain scenes would work, but the fact that they did is a testament to the director’s skill:

Turns out it’s one of the funniest and craziest theme parks you’ve ever been a part of. You’re like, ‘How is the camera going to get through that corridor? How do we hide in this bathroom? That’s it, they’re all kinds of funny things, and it’s just a testament to David Leitch and his imagination. It is brilliant.
