Music ‘unknown’ singer who stole the scene in the best of blues and rock

Presenting himself in Brazil for the first time, Judith Hill did not seem familiar to an audience that was not long to recognize her huge talent

Alice Cooper. Deep Purple. Dave Matthews Band. Richard Ashcroftthe voice of The Verve. Amid this starred international lineup of the 12th Best of Blues and Rockclosed last Sunday, 15, after four days of sound, there was a much less known American artist of the public who occupied the lawn of Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo. But his work is as good as that of the consecrated artists who stepped on the same stage.

Judith Hilla 41 -year -old -year -old singer of Los Angeles, seemed to know that she could find an audience alien to her work. New to Brazil, the artist was still performing just before Purple, whose seminal work for hard rock has little to do with her sound. Therefore, it made sure to impact the first seconds. With the stage still dark, without prior ad and even a few minutes before the scheduled time, she surprised to play verses of “Feeling Good”classic Nina Simonewith an impressive vocal power.

It was just a preview of what the public positioned outside the Ibirapuera Auditorium would witness the next time. Accompanied by a band with their own parents (Robert “Pewee” Hillin the bass, and Michiko Hillon keyboards) besides the drummer John StatenJudith, also guitarist, presented an exquisite execution repertoire distilling:

  • funk, as in the dancing “Runaway Train”;
  • soul, like the affable “Burn It All” and the typically eighty “You Got It Kid”;
  • blues, noticed already at the opening in “I can only love you by fire”who remembers “Dazed and Confused” of LED ZEPPELIN;
  • and in a way to a pontinha of rock, felt in heavier stretches of “Flame”.

Even with the technical dexterity of the instrumentalists, however, it was impossible to urge the eyes of the main artist. Beyond the vocal execution that refers to the best times of Aretha Franklin And from the aforementioned Nina Simone – albeit with her own identity -, Hill is a great songwriter and full -hand guitarist. With a Gibson SG in hand, he held the scolding in the different types of arrangements, from the groove burned “Gypsy Love” to the intense closing blues “Cry, Cry, Cry”with chilling soils.

The public has shown approval at various times. Not only by music, but also for the message. In the section of the set, two ballads – the first led to the piano – of a personal character caught the eye. The melancholy “Give Your Love To Someone Else” was started with a motivational speech on the footprint of “Life is a journey and not a destination”, while “Dame de la lumière” It brought her by referencing her paternal grandmother and her mother, credited as those responsible for turning her into a “strong and powerful woman.”

Those who did not know Judith Hill left Ibirapuera with a beautiful business card. Perhaps they find that the American worked as a vocal backing of Michael Jackson and Prince (producer of his first solo album, Back in time2015) and recorded with names of the size of Rod Stewart, GREGG ALLMAN, Robbie Williams, Barry Manilow and Incubusamong many others. May the show on Sunday, 15, be the beginning of a good relationship with Brazil.
