Director says he should have filmed Silence instead of making one of his most acclaimed films by the public
Martin Scorsese (Flower Moon Assassins), one of the most respected filmmakers in the history of cinema, revealed that there is one film in his filmography that he regrets, even though it was considered a success with the public and critics. However, according to the director himself, he preferred not to have done so.
In an interview with GQ, Scorsese revealed that the film in question is Fear Islandpsychological thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another). He stated that his decision to direct the film was motivated by the creative impulse after winning the Oscar for The Departed in 2007. The filmmaker believes he should have taken advantage of that moment to shoot Silencehis 2016 historical drama about Christian missionaries in Japan — a project he had been trying to achieve for over twenty years.
Launched in 2010, Fear Island adapts the novel by Dennis Lehane and follows investigator Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo, Avengers: Endgame) in the search for a missing patient in an isolated psychiatric hospital. The film is known for its claustrophobic atmosphere, noir atmosphere and one of the most debated endings of his career. Scorsese.
Despite good reviews — 69% approval among critics and 77% among the public on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes — the director never showed great attachment to the work.
