Interview with Luiz Carlini (Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti)
About the idea of celebrating the 50 years of Forbidden fruit with special show
Luiz Carlini: “Now that this album is turning 50, I felt that we had to do something to honor this award -winning work. The album revealed Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti in a way… We already had two previous albums – one that was not released – but that’s what has burst. And there are a lot of classics in it: ‘This Roque ENROW’, ‘Black Sheep’, ‘Now just miss you’among others. Paulo Baronentrepreneur of Top Link Musicbought the fight to do this show at Tokio Marine Hall and told us to get guests. All my friends to whom I called themselves volunteered – some of them play or even record some of these songs. The guests are: Roberto Frejat, Paulo Ricardo, Andreas Kisser, Supla, LobĂŁo, Marisa Orth and, believe me if you want, Jorge Ben Jor. He kicked off rock in Brazil. The mutantsmy reference band since childhood, recorded ‘My girl’his music. ”
About the possibility of rolling a commemorative tour:
LC: “Let’s do. Of course, not with these guests who participate in this SĂŁo Paulo show. But I always used guests at the show. I want to do in other capitals with local guests and artists.”

Luiz Carlini’s bond with the mutants:
LC: “I was born in SĂŁo Paulo, in the Pompei neighborhood, the cradle of Brazilian rock. I am a lucky one. I was neighboring the house of the mutants. At the corner, Made in Brazil. I started to live this scene. SĂ©rgio Dias I was my friend at 11 years old. That’s when they moved to Pompeii. He was the first to encourage me to play guitar. I met the mutants before they named it – and Rita was already attending. When I met her, she was about 16 years old and I was between 11 and 12. Sometimes they even say that I was roadie of the mutants, but in the past there was no roadie here: friends carried the equipment and went together. ”
The beginning of the partnership with Rita Lee:
LC: “It reached the point where the mutants walked into progressive rock in the early 1970s, and I was in a lyergic era myself, which led me to create my first band. I was always composing, it wasn’t a cover. And my band was called Lisergiafor the moment we lived, and my name, which is Luiz SĂ©rgioturned LUIZ ‘SERGICAL’. When Rita left the mutants, she tried to make a pair with the LĂşcia Turnbull call Eden cilibrines. It was short lived, because it was a folk duo. It was cool, but I needed band. We were close, so we were kind of ‘the ball of the time’. That’s how lisergia gathered with Rita Lee. Commercially speaking, she couldn’t call Lisergia, so we were baptized Tutti Frutti by Antonio Bivarwho was our show director. ”
The quality leap between Behind Porto has a city (First album released by Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti, in 1974) and Forbidden fruit:
LC: “It’s called ‘Evolution.’ We were a very determined band. We rehearsed every day, we walked together, we were going to the movies together-with Rita, including. The union grew up, we were composing and understanding. I was very young in the first album, was about 19 years old. Behind Porto has a city Very authentic, with good songs. It’s the ‘Mom Nature’ and other hits, besides some songs that were from Lisergia, both riffs and texts. ”
The influence of Andy Mills, OP producer who is not a producer, inForbidden fruit:
LC: “Andy Mills is an Englishman – we still talked rarely over the internet – who came to Brazil with Alice Cooper as Stage Manager, like a roadie that sends on stage. For some reason, he stayed in Brazil and met Rita, with whom she started dating. She was a guy updated with what happened in international rock. He worked for a famous band, everyone thought he knew everything, but it wasn’t like that: he learned with us too. ‘Now you just miss you’ Being in just one stereo corner, pianos are tall, etc. And that’s because he was not an English mega. Still, he brought a legal experience and vibe. ”
“Now just miss you,” Luiz Carlini’s co -authorship on the album:
LC: “I did the whole melodic line of the song at home and started writing the lyrics. I stopped and called Rita to help me. I went to her house in Pacaembu like 3 pm and came back at 17h with the song ready. She came in with the second part of the lyrics. This song became a hit. Ricardo, Zizi Possi, Pitty for the trail of ‘Workout’, Maria Rita, Caetano Veloso played at a show, I’ve seen the Whimper sing. A success. ”
The song that is “the face of Rita Lee”:
LC: “‘This Roque Enter’ It’s Rita’s face. She is talking about the mother and such, who sees her daughter that way. A great classic. Sometimes I think: this song calls ‘this Roque Enter’, but it is all ‘broken’. It is not a rock n ‘roll with standard 4×4. In Tutti Frutti, this is due to the Lee marcuccibecause his bass was all ‘brilliance’, even by progressive influence. I have never seen Lee as a Black Music bassist with Levada, swing. It has always been more through the bottom phrases, some ‘troubled’ things. ”
“Black sheep”, the maximum hit of the album:
LC: “’Black sheep’ means ‘Rita Lee’. It’s a song that the artist makes for her, how Raul Seixas he did ‘Crazy Beauty’ for you. I think it’s Rita Lee’s best work, everything she has done. She composed this song in front of us. She made the first chords and I made a part of harmony, which is ‘baby, baby, it’s no use…’, but without the lyrics – all that harmony, which is the ground. Not constituting as an author, she didn’t put me and I think she should have put it, because I did the harmony after she said, ‘What now?’
The soil of “black sheep”:
LC: “There was no solo initially. I was listening to the song in the studio and she was just lowering the volume, a little sad, empty. I felt that I should put something so much that I dreamed of the ground and woke up whistling. I received this soil. I think it was given, because I also thought about. I didn’t show anyone. I wanted to try the next day, no one wanted to. [Risos] We heard several times, so I told us to record again, with another drive, Andy said, ‘No, it’s already recorded’. And took the tape. ”
The tour of Forbidden fruit:
LC: “We toured the Northeast with a truck bringing all the equipment, lighting and scenery. There was nothing. We went to all the big cities there. It was only taken. The shows were done in gym, because it was the place that was more people in the city. bands that also tours, such as the mutants, Made in Brazil, The third… There was no infrastructure for the tours. Brazilian rock is very brave in this regard. ”
