Free music helps artists professionalize their musical careers

Initiative of the Brazilian Music Award in partnership with BTG Pactual and Saint Paul wants to train musicians in management, marketing and finance

Transforming passion into a profession is the challenge of many artists in Brazil. Thinking about it, the BTG Pactual Brazilian Music Award launched the project Music is businessfree initiative that offers practical training for artists to structure their careers focused on musical entrepreneurship. With the support of BTG Pactual and from Saint Paul Business Schoolthe course proposes to fill a historical gap in the industry: the lack of access to strategic knowledge about the music market.

The program will be entirely online, with video lessons released monthly from July 24, and is focused on acting artists, whether interpreters, composers, musicians or producers. The course structure includes five fundamental modules: digital marketing, copyright and contracts, fundraising, networking and partnerships, and finance.

A real diagnosis of the market

The creation of the project was based on a survey with 100 artists participating in the Brazilian Music Awardrepresenting various regions and genres. The data widened the obstacles faced:

  • 84% They cited financial barriers as the greatest challenge;

  • 54% have difficulties with dissemination;

  • 88% They lack knowledge about fundraising;

  • 81% They still play their careers with their own resources.

The research also revealed that only 27% artists use music licensing as a source of income, while 85% depend exclusively on cachet. The presence of merchandising as a business model is still marginal, practiced by only 12%.
