Artist explains origin of the makeup he developed at the beginning of his career and was part of his character on stage for years
As much as the poetry contained in the letters of the Dry & Wetthe voice and the imposing presence of Ney Matogrosso They made the band one of the greatest phenomena of Brazilian music in the 1970s.
Ney sang like few, with an extreme high, rare to meet, but also with an overwhelming stage posture. It also included an extravagant makeup that helped draw attention and at the same time preserve its identity.
How did the idea of painting for the shows come about? According to the artist, the motivation was precisely to prevent him from being recognized by the public on the streets – at least at the beginning.
In an interview with the program Conversation with Bialfrom the Rede Globotranscribed by Rolling Stone BrazilNey explained:
“The painted was to save me from the displeasure of not being able to walk on the street. Because they said that artist was not on the street. How was I going to lose the right to walk on the street at 31 years old?”

According to him, the strategy worked. At the beginning of Dry & Wetfew recognized him – not even after the band had a apotheotic show in the Maracanãzinhoin Rio de Janeiroin February 1974.
“While I kept that (painting) … After (show at) Maracanãzinho, the next day I was on the beach, played, just listening to people talk about me. They said crazy things, okay? Thanks to that white mask.”
João Ricardo talks about painting from Dry & Wet
Another member of the Dry & WetJoão Ricardo, has also offered his version for the use of makeup and extravagant clothing by the band.
According to him, in a statement granted to the magazine Brazilians (via website Igor Miranda), in 2002, the origin was Glam Rock, a rise musical movement in the early 1970s with bands like T. Rex and solo artists like David Bowie and Alice Cooper.
The composer, responsible for most songs in the Dry & Wets, said at the time:
“The need is the mother of the invention and it was the time of the progressive bands, who had a powerful sound apparatus. We were the opposite of this: musically stripped, but we had theatrical references and started inventing exits to not lose ground, such as wearing extravagant clothes and makeup. Alice Cooper was successful in the United States, David Bowie, England, and plasticly brought the ideas of Glam and Glitter to the extreme. We were fortunate to involve around us millions of social layers, all creeds, colors and ages, something that didn’t happen to Bowie or Alice Cooper. “
