Vocalist of the group in question received praise from Iron Maiden’s frontman in various situations: “The best voice of his generation”
When they came up, the bands grunge They divided opinions from those who already heard heavy sound. There were those who approved the groups that emerged from the American city of Seattle – or influenced by that sound – but there were those who wrinkled their nose. Heavy Metal audiences, in particular, did not approve that much.
It’s not quite the case of Bruce Dickinson. The vocalist of Iron Maidenwho spent most of the 1990s outside the band that consecrated him, even explored the subgenre influences on the album Skunkworks (1996). The album anterior to this, Balls to Picasso (1994), does not bring this kind of sound, but was released just at the moment of greater popularity of the style.
In an interview with Loudwire, Dickinson recalled the period – because he is relaunching Balls to Picasso in a reimaginated version, More Balls to Picasso – And he took the opportunity to make a complimentary comment about some grunge attractions. One of them, in particular, sounded like “Led Zeppelin of the 1990s” in his opinion: the Soundgarden.
“I need to say that I was a big fan of Chris Cornell and Soundgarden. Great fan of Alice in Chains also. Great songs. Soundgarden, for me, was like a modern, up -to -date Led Zeppelin, and his voice was simply the best voice of his generation. ”

Interestingly, the late Cornell, who left us in 2017, didn’t like the comparisons with Zeppelin. In this case, at least, the parallel is drawn in a positive tone. However, in an interview from 1989 to Spin (via Igor Miranda site), he said:
“Okay., Let’s deal with the questions about Led Zeppelin. Where did we start? We think the comparisons are valid? Which Led Zeppelin disk has changed our lives? Why is my hair long and curly like Robert Plant? When we were initially labeled like this three years ago, that’s fine. At the time, all in Seattle were interested in Smiths and Cureand Zeppelin was ‘out of fashion’. […] But lately all comparisons with Led Zeppelin have become a nuisance for the band. It was never anyone’s favorite band in the group. ”
Bruce Dickinson loves Chris Cornell
On more than one occasion, Bruce Dickinson praised Chris Cornell. To Folha de S.Paulo, in 1997, he said:
“The best voice I heard in Rock is Chris Cornell’s [do então extinto Soundgarden]. I think he won’t sing heavy rock anymore, but he can overcome any metal vocalist. ”
Already to SongFacts (via Igor Miranda site) in 2024, he even said that Cornell surpassed the legendary Ronnie James Dio in a specific aspect. Dickinson scored:
“Being honest, Chris’s differential for me is that he had a better emotional reach than Ronnie’s. […] I’m a big fan of Ronnie. And Chris Cornell was taken from us even before starting to do his best, I think. Very sad.”
