Roberto Medina, organizer of Rock in Rio, explained how the festival needed the help of Sinatra and Queen
Roberto Medinrevealed unusual help to carry out the first Rock in Rio in 1985. Still unknown on the market, the producer relied on Frank Sinatra to attract media attention.
As revealed in the documentary Rock in Rio – The Historyof Globoplay, Medina produced the singer’s sold-out show at Maracanã in 1980. Upon learning of the attempt to create the ambitious festival and the difficulties in gathering the attention of the newspapers, Sinatra summoned the press to the businessman.
“He called the press and everyone went. There were more than a hundred journalists and the next day the entire United States… It was the cover of the Los Angeles Times, was on the cover of every major American newspaper. ‘The biggest rock event in the world is going to take place in Brazil’,” he said (via gshow).
