Despite being one of the great names of the instrument, Pink Floyd musician does not hesitate to provide tribute to another British guitar genius
David Gilmour He has great admiration for Blues, although he did not specialize as a style guitarist. The musician of Pink Floyd ended up walking a wider path and is not exactly a purist as Eric Claptonbut always made a point of providing tribute to the colleague, one of his greatest influences.
More than that, Gilmour admits Clapton’s “envy”, as he admits that he could never play like him. Sometimes the guitarist of Pink Floyd It has already stated that it was not as fast and accurate as the great masters of the instrument. Therefore, he specialized in the melody and feeling of the songs.
In an interview from 1988 to Guitar world (via Far Out), Gilmour explained his fascination with his passionate and knowledge -filled form with which Clapton touches the instrument, especially being blues.
He said:
“I must confess that I have some envy of Eric Clapton’s position. He has his rich material of his own, but he is also such a consummated blues musician that he has a wealth of material from other older artists he can play, even though he is not so well known. He can launch a new band all the time and do his job, and that would be a great position to be.”

Gilmour has already quoted Eric Clapton as one of the artists who changed his life. The guitarist was and is a great appreciator of Clapton’s work with John Mayallespecially on the disk Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton (1966).
In another statement highlighted by Far Outhe explained:
“All those guys were amazing and I spent time trying to learn to play their Licks perfectly. I would suggest that any young musician try to sit and do it. You will eventually touch their material very well, but eventually you will find your own style from that. It imposes itself on copy.”
David Gilmour and Blues
Subsequently, having developed his own musical signature, Gilmour evaluates that he was able to incorporate elements of blues, but without being hostage to style. Currently, he does not hear the genre so often and reflects on:
“I do not consciously deepen in this area now. The blues lines themselves are quite specific. It’s like you have a number of things you can put together in different combinations, but there are not many movements you can do. Instead, I try to approach things, given my limitations and strengths, from a more melodic point of view and simply work until you sound … cool.”
Eric Clapton and … Roger Waters
Despite the devotion to Eric Clapton, David Gilmour did not have the guitarist in one of his solo albums. Who did it was Roger Watersits disaffection after the litigious rupture of the Pink Floyd.
In 1984, Clapton was a guests on Waters’s debut album in solo career, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking. He also came out on tour with Roger at the time.
Subsequently, Clapton also revisited songs from the Pink Floyd Alongside Waters, as in 2004, at the charity show for the tsunami victims that hit Indonesia and other Asian countries.
