Music that Green Day is more influential than Ramones, according to Billy Corgan

Smashing Pumpkins leader is a fan of Joey’s group, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone, but admits: young people’s success is unprecedented and also amplifies references

You Ramones They are practically untouchable in punk rock. Established in the 1970s as one of the most influential bands of the genre, they were active until 1996, when they closed activities to never return – because all its original members died in the following years.

Pioneering aside, the group never achieved the deserved commercial success. To get an idea, the group only got their first gold album in 1992, in Brazil, with Mondo Bizarre (1992). His 1976, namesake debut album, received such certification in the United States only in 2014.

On the other hand, other names in the punk scenery and its ramifications obtained enormous commercial success. One of the largest in this regard is the Green Daywhich sold over 75 million copies across the planet. Only DookieIts third album had more than 20 million units sold only in the United States.

For situations like that, Billy Corgan Consider the Green Day Bigger than the Ramones, even if you love the oldest band. In an interview with Rolling Stone USA (via Igor Miranda site), the musician reflected:

“I was watching the ceremony where Green Day received a star on Hollywood’s fame of fame and they definitely deserve it. I started to have certain memories and thought, ‘Wow, I have known these guys for over 30 years, we just toured together and, my God, they are bigger than the Ramones.”

In Corgan’s view, Green Day surpasses the Ramones not only in commercial success, but also in influence. How more people know and admire the group led by the vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrongof course, there are also more inspirations arising from their work – although undoubtedly the younger ones have been inspired by Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee Ramone and your partners.

“In the world where I grew up, the Ramones ranked first. And in a way they will always occupy, because they were the first. But then I realized, ‘My God, Green Day really got it, they are bigger than the Ramones. Their influence is greater, the range is greater and certainly the success too.’ Admit: ‘Wow, they got it’. ”

GREEN DAY IDOLATRA RAMONES

If Green Day influences many people, the Ramones also inspire all this guys, albeit indirectly. Billie Joe Armstrong even describes Joey Ramone, a late vocalist of the eldest group, like Punk Jesus.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated:

“Joey is the Jesus of Punk. He has this captivating quality in which his voice matches his appearance. He is incredibly handsome, kind of like a mantis. He is clumsy, with long legs and his voice sounds like this (imitating Joey’s voice)-it’s like an really insecure boy who has become empowered through rock and roll.”
