A man was found dead “lying on a puddle” during the festival Burning manheld in the Nevada Desert, in a case that local and federal authorities are investigating as murder.
The victim, not yet identified and described as white, was located around 9:14 pm on Saturday, after the Pershing County Patrol and agents of the Bureau of Land Management responded to a call on a man lying in the event’s camp, the sheriff said Jerry Allenfrom Pershing County, in a statement on Sunday.
The Forensic Sciences Division of the Washoe County Sheriff Office was also called to the scene. The victim’s body was later taken to the Washoe County Medical-Legal Institute.
The investigation is still in progress, and several participants in the Burning man that were in the area near the event were interviewed. The body was found shortly before the main sculpture of the event, known as “Man” – a great work of wood in human form located in Black Rock City, the temporary city where the festival takes place annually – start to be burned down.
“This process is still underway and the area of the ‘city’ where this occurred will have a strong police presence until the crime scene is released,” he said Allen.
“Although this act seems to be an isolated crime, all participants must remain alert to their surroundings and the surrounding people,” he added. “There is no additional information available at the moment, but it will be appropriately disclosed, ensuring communication with the public and preserving the integrity of the investigation of a crime in a city that will cease to exist until the middle of the week.”
The organizers of Burning man They said they are cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation and provided support resources for participants. “If you are in Black Rock City, do not interfere with security forces activities,” they said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our community are maximum priorities.”
