In the late 1980s, the American band had to replace Dee Dee Ramone on bass – and someone was eventually arrested for it

It is worth being a deserter to live the dream rock ‘n’ roll. Apparently, it is what proves CJ Ramonebassist of the punk icon band who joined the group in the late 1980s in an unconventional way.

Well, in parts. It was through auditions that he was tested and chosen for the function. So far, everything normal. But the musician had to go to prison because of it.

Christopher Joseph Ward I was 24 years old in 1989 when Ramones had to replace Dee Dee Ramonewho was the band’s main composer and left her. The group started testing options and, as CJ told the Guitar worldhe managed to appear to the auditions.

“I had a friend who played in a band with the brother of Joey (Ramone). He called me and said: ‘The Ramones They are doing open auditions for a bassist ‘. I was in the navy at the time, which made everything a little complicated, but I went to that open hearing. ”

CJ said in the interview that he was relaxed for the tests, as the fact that he was in the corporation took his pressure. He simply did not create expectation of joining the band at that time.

The bassist recalls:

“I learned a few songs quickly, I went to the hearing and it was very simple. I entered, I introduced myself and, being realistic, as I was in the body of Marines, had no expectation of getting it, which made me even more peaceful.”

But the thing started to change:

“At some point, I realized that I was going to get it because I was coming early and staying later, and I realized that I was not seeing anyone twice, and that most of these guys were not receiving return.”

As he continued to go to the auditions, CJ even realized that it could be chosen for Ramones and decided to communicate to the corporation. It was bad:

“At that time, I was a deserter of the Marines body. They were waiting for me to decide what I would do, so I called back to the base when I realized I could move on the test. They sent the police, came to catch me and took me to jail.”

CJ describes the path that went through until it was found by the Ramones:

“First, I went to Fort Hamiltonin Brooklyn. Then I was transferred to the naval base in the Philadelphia. From there, I went to Quantum, Virginiaand that’s when the band found me. ”

In Virginia, CJ received a call. It was Johnny Ramone:

“I said, ‘Johnny, listen… I’m really sorry. I should have told you what was going on. I apologize.’ He said, ‘Well, what’s going on?’ I said, ‘I’ll be here for a few months, and then they will release me.’ He replied, ‘Okay.
