From Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero” to Scorpions’ “Wind of Change,” she gave us a masterclass in how to sing other people’s songs

Back in March, during the start of the most recent leg of his tour Radical Optimism in Melbourne, Dua Lipa told the audience he had a crazy idea. “To make my life a little more difficult, I thought, ‘Why don’t I make a new song every night?’” she said. “Let’s make a local artist in every place we are.” She then dove into a rapturous rendition of “Highway to Hell” of AC/DC.

More than 50 shows and 16 countries later, Lipa kept his promise, covering songs from different genres throughout the history of pop music, from “99 Luftballons” of Nena until “Hey Ya!” of OutKast. As Bon Scott she said, there are no stop signs, no speed limit — no one is going to slow her down.

Lipa ends the American leg of the tour Radical Optimism on October 16th. To celebrate, we decided to rank his ten best covers from the world tour. As with many pop stars these days, she brought several of the artists she was covering on stage to help her sing her songs. We kept these duets to a minimum on our list, to better showcase their versatility and ability with covers. Get ready to levitate.

Natalie Imbruglia, “Torn”

Melbourne, Australia, 3/19/25

Fact: Artists born between 1994 and 2004 are obsessed with “Torn” of Ednaswapwhich became a mega-hit for Natalie Imbruglia in 1997. You can see the alt-pop hit covered by everyone from One Direction the Phoebe Bridgers and Olivia Rodrigowhich brought Imbruglia on stage to sing it in 2022. So it made sense for Lipa take on this classic from the late nineties, and she had a lot of fun doing it, throwing her feather boa in the air and celebrating Imbruglia in your Australia Christmas. The line “Illusion never changed/Into something real” is also appropriate, considering that Dua Lipa started performing his own music “Illusion” later that night. That’s how she feels.

INXS, “Never Tear Us Apart”

Sydney, Australia, 3/26/25

“Na Australiathere are an abundance of incredible artists who have inspired me throughout my life,” Lipa he told the audience during his first of three nights in Sydney. “Every time I think about these songs, they are so ingrained in British culture. I feel like it just brings us closer together, even though we’re on opposite sides of the world. This is a song I keep coming back to… I hope you guys know it.” The Qudos Bank Arena exploded when she began singing this beloved eighties power ballad, taking lines like “’Cause we all have wings/But some of us don’t know why” to extraordinary heights (seriously, check out that part at 2:40, you won’t regret it). It was only the sixth night of the tour, and Lipa it was just beginning.

Enrique Iglesias, “Hero”

Madrid, Spain, 5/11/25

Would you dance if I asked you to dance? During the first of two nights in Madrid, Lipa serenaded a packed Movistar Arena with “Hero” of Enrique Iglesias — sung entirely in Spanish. Five minutes into the video above, the audience applauds as she brings the chorus to an emotional climax: “Because you saved yourself a thousand times!Churches released the huge hit on September 3, 2001, and it became an inspirational anthem for many after 9/11. Nearly 25 years later, it’s now adored among millennials, including the pop star herself on stage, beaming with her sea of fans singing along.

Scorpions, “Wind of Change”

Hamburg, Germany, 5/20/25

“Node Scorpionswe have this kind of motto: Love, peace and rock & roll”, the guitarist Rudolf Schenker told us in 2015. “Love represents ‘Still Loving You’. Rock & roll represents ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’. And peace? It’s because ‘Wind of Change’“. Amen, brother. No one understands this motto better than Dua Lipawho covered the 1990 power ballad during their second night in Hamburg, shortly after rocking out with “99 Luftballons” on Night One (seriously, this woman has taste). In the future, we’d love to see her cover other hits from the German hard-rockers — she’d totally kill it. “No One Like You”.

Aerosmith, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

Boston, MA, 9/9/25

Clearly, as the last few items on this list show, Lipa is a pro at covering power ballads — it’s a shame she hasn’t covered one “Sister Christian” of Night Ranger in San Francisco in October. But she blessed us in Boston with this interpretation of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” of Aerosmithco-written by Diane Warren for the film Armageddon (1998). You have to respect her choices: She could have covered “Janie’s Got a Gun” or “Livin’ on the Edge” or even “Dream On”but instead chooses this tearful late-nineties melodrama about a guy who likes to hear his girlfriend breathe in her sleep. We are here for this, Dua.

Donna Summer, “Bad Girls”

Boston, MA, 10/9/25

In a move that showed both his versatility and his mastery of music history, Lipa went from covering Aerosmith on Night One in Boston for Donna Summer on Night Two. “She’s a disco diva,” she said of the late legend. “We have some bad girls in the audience tonight?” She had so much fun with this one, dancing around in her shiny all-black outfit, boa resting on her shoulder. Lipa covered a lot of records on this tour, from chic the Earth, Wind & Fire. But your moment “Bad Girls” was the pinnacle, reminding us that she may very well have another Future Nostalgia on the sleeve.

Alicia Keys, “No One”

New York, NY, 9/17/25

The four nights of Lipa at Madison Square Garden performed interpretations of “One Way or Another” of blondie, “Le Freak” of chic (with own Neil Rodgers) and “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over” of Lenny Kravitz (with Kravitz). But the first night — where she covered “No One” of Alicia Keys — was the highlight of his time at Big Apple. It’s a full circle moment for Dua Lipawho sang the huge 2007 hit when he was just 12 years old; that video lit up the MSG screen, before the Lipa of the present day take over. And beyond her meaning, she simply rocks here, with her low register combining perfectly with Keys. Consider this our official plea for her to face “Fallin’” during his upcoming season at the Garden.

Ariana Grande, “One Last Time”

Miami, FL, 9/27/25

Lipa kicked off two nights in Miami with a cover of “Conga” of Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. For Night Two on Kaseya Centershe paid tribute to another Floridian: Ariana Grande. “I feel like everyone kind of knows and remembers exactly where they were when this song came out,” she told the audience. “So if you know, please sing along.” She then launched herself into a propulsive, magnetizing “One Last Time”which even the Big reposted. You can see which covers fans of Lipa know better. When it came to the 2015 hit by Bigthey knew every word.

Fleetwood Mac, “The Chain”

Inglewood, CA, 10/4/25

What better way to start four nights in California than by covering one of the most quintessentially Californian bands of all time? “I think about so many artists and creators who come to this city to find themselves, to find their sound, to find who they are,” Lipa told the Kia Forum in Inglewood. “To, like, go to Hollywood and discover what makes them unique and what makes them special and what gives them that touch of magic. And this next song is from a band that did just that in Los Angeles“.She chose “The Chain” of Fleetwood Mac of Rumorsgoing full Lindsey Buckingham while her band supported her on backing vocals. Honorable mention goes to her cover of “California Dreamin’” of Mamas and the Papas the following night. Lipa did a wonderful job on that one, but it’s not Mac — the current holds us together.

Lionel Richie, “All Night Long”

Lipa brought countless legends on stage with her throughout the tour — especially in California, where she called Gwen Stefani to “Don’t Speak” of No Doubt and Billie Joe Armstrong to “Wake Me Up When September Ends” of Green Day. Ranking his onstage collaborations would require a separate list, but we would like to highlight his performance with the one and only Lionel Richie. She brought him during her third night in Inglewoodfor an ecstatic “All Night Long”. Transformed the Kia Forum on a dance floor, with the audience ecstatically singing along. The presentation summarizes the entire series of covers by Dua Lipa from the tour — a joyful look at music history through the lens of one of today’s most exciting pop stars. Dare we call her radically optimistic?
