Osgood Perkins, director of horror films such as Longlegs, has harshly criticized Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story
The series Monster: The Ed Gein Storynew chapter of the anthology of Ryan Murphy about famous killers, focuses on the notorious serial killer who inspired fictional characters such as Norman Bates, of Psychosis. The criticism of Osgood Perkins has a personal background: he is the son of Anthony Perkinsthe actor who played Norman Batesand which is also portrayed in the series of Murphy. In an interview with TMZthe director explained why “I wouldn’t watch [a série] not by far”.
Perkins accused streaming services of turning real crimes into “glamorous and meaningful content” and said he was concerned that culture was being “remodeled in real time by ‘Overlords’”.
He added that this type of production is “increasingly devoid of context” and that the “Netflix-ization of real pain […] You’re playing for the wrong team.” For the director, when approaching historical events, art should be “peeking behind the veil of the unknowable and loving each other through new and expansive art”.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story reached the top of the charts Netflixdespite criticism about its violence. The newspaper The Guardian classified the season as “totally devoid of morality”. This isn’t the anthology’s first controversy. The second season, Menendez Brothers: Parental Killerswas criticized by the Erik Menendezwho labeled her as a “dishonest portrait”. At the time, Ryan Murphy defended the production, stating that Erik I hadn’t watched the series.
Perkinsknown for his strong opinions, revealed earlier this year that he would never direct a James Bond film following Amazon’s purchase of the franchise. Asked why in a Reddit AMA, he responded: “No, because fuck Jeff Bezos“.
