These days, it has become more common for popular films to get sequels / followed decades later. In fact, the most commercially successful film of 2022 falls into this “legacyquel” category, with Top Gun: Maverick surpassing one billion dollars worldwide as well as being critically acclaimed. So how did Tom Cruise stage his return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell? According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it was as simple as calling Paramount Pictures and telling the studio they were doing it.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Jerry Bruckheimer on behalf of the Top Gun: Maverick digital broadcasting. After noting how the sequel had been in development since 2010 and suffered a setback when Tony Scott, the original best gunthe director who was supposed to return to helmsman, died in 2012, I asked Bruckheimer when he and the other creative minds behind Dissident decided the film was still worth making. He replied:
Well, Tom felt that Maverick was an iconic character in his filmography, and if he was going to do a sequel, he had to hit a ball with a ball. And Joe Kosinski had an idea that we played with, but Joe got it. And we flew to Paris while Tom was doing Mission: Impossible, and Joe had a notebook and sat down with Tom and he said, “Here’s a story I want to tell, and that’s how it’s going to be.. And Tom looked at it and said:” ‘Look, Joe, if we have to do this, we’ll make it. I want everyone on these planes, I want to hear it. And Joe said, “That’s the only way I want to do it.” And Tom picked up the phone and called the studio boss. at that moment and said, “I want to make another Top Gun.” And, of course, they were delighted.
Tom Cruise was working specifically Mission: Impossible: Fallout when Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise Forgottencame to prominence with its launch for Top Gun: Maverick. Again, the sequel to the 1986 hit had been in development for a while at this point, but Cruise wanted Kosinski to realize that Dissident he would only take off (pun entirely intentional) if his co-stars were trained to fly and actually joined him in the sky.
