In the 2022 edition, the Migos group, Alcione, Megadeth and Joss Stone canceled the performances. Another artist who almost suspended participation in the event was Justin Bieber, who went up to the Mundo Stage last Sunday (4).

Rock in Rio has become one of the most important music festivals in the world, but even so, some artists have already canceled the concerts of the event. In fact, some victims in programming trembled more than others. Throughout this story, fans end up walking away empty-handed, especially when the cancellation is done at the last minute.
In fact, if we consider that the festival has existed for more than 30 years, several cancellations have occurred over time. Therefore, due to scheduling conflicts or health problems, these events have marked the history of the festival. Lady GagaJay Z, Cardi B and there are other artists who would have come to the festival but ended up changing plans.
In this year’s edition the Migos group and Alcione ended up canceling their participation in the event. Amid rumors of separation, the trio of American hunters withdrew from programming for “unrelated reasons”. The Brazilian singer has instead canceled the show that she would have done in honor of Elza Soares, justifying her personal reasons.
Megadeth and Joss Stone were also names that canceled participation in the 2022 edition. Although the metal band did not justify the change of plans, the reason behind Joss Stone’s cancellation was rather unusual. The singer revealed that it was all a mistake made by her manager.
Also last Sunday (4) was surrounded by rumors of a possible cancellation of Justin Bieber at the festival. Eventually, the Canadian singer went up to the Mundo Stage that night, but canceled the rest of the shows he would be doing in Brazil to take care of his health.
Check out the celebrities who canceled the shows at Rock in Rio and made the festival’s history:
Lady Gaga – Rock in Rio 2017
Lady Gaga’s cancellation at Rock in Rio 2017 marked the birth of the iconic “Brazil, I’m devastated” meme. A few hours after the disclosure of the incident, the singer expressed regret on social media. The news took the public by surprise, as was confirmed at the last minute.
Brazil, I am devastated that I am not well enough 2 come to Rock In Rio. I would do anything for 4 but I have to take care of my body right now.
– Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) 14 September 2017
The reason for the cancellation of the show was due to health problems. Following medical recommendations, Lady Gaga had to suspend her presentation to treat the condition of fibromyalgia, a rheumatological disease that affects her muscles causing pain.
Jay Z – Rock in Rio 2011
In 2011, about a month away from the festival, Jay Z canceled his show at the event. Despite having as justification alleged “personal problems”, until now the real reason behind the incident has not been clarified.
As the event was still a few weeks away, the Rock in Rio organization managed to choose the band Maroon 5 to replace the rapper.
O Rappa, Cidade Negra, Raimundos, Skank, Charlie Brown Jr. and Jota Quest – Rock in Rio 2001
This cancellation certainly went down in festival history. Several groups joined the protest and suspended performances during the event. It all started with the band O Rappa, disappointed in being placed as the “opening” for international attractions.
The disrespectful treatment by the organization did not allow the group to have the right to the soundcheck before the show. Thus, bands like Cidade Negra, Raimundos, Skank, Charlie Brown Jr. and Jota Quest joined the boycott in support.
It is worth mentioning that, in this year’s edition, the Jota Quest band was added to the festival program to replace the Migos group.
Cardi B – Rock in Rio 2019
The 2019 edition would not only mark Cardi B’s debut at the festival, but would be the rapper’s first show in Brazil. This was a feat that has not yet come to fruition. As with Jay Z, the artist’s justification was stated as “personal reasons”.
What attracted attention throughout this story was the replacement of the show. In place of Cardi B, the organization of the festival has put Ellie Goulding. At the time, the pop singer hadn’t released a new album in four years, so audiences thought the replacement was beyond the unusual.
Van Halen – Rock in Rio 2013
The time lag between the confirmation and cancellation of the band Van Halen at Rock in Rio was very fast. As soon as the group was announced as one of the festival’s headliners, it was officially canceled a few days later.
It is worth mentioning that the rock group has performed in Brazil only once, in 1983. Despite this, the 2013 edition of Rock in Rio saw the participation of big names in the genre, such as Bon Jovi and Iron Maiden.
