Elton John and Britney Spears Partnership Gets Official Video

The partnership between Elton John and Britney Spears won an official clip. Made without the presence of the singers, the video for “Hold Me Closer” features several pairs of dancers who share gestures and affections in a choreography of intimacy.

The contemporary dance production was directed by Tanu Muino and shot in colorful locations in Mexico City. Muino won the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Director for Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”.

Interestingly, Britney and Elton also didn’t meet in person to work on the song. The Princess of Pop worked in the studio, while Elton participated in a video call.

“Hold me Closer” is a recreation of the 1971 British musician hit “Tiny Dancer”, with references to 1991 “The One” and the classic 1976 record “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. The recording was produced by Grammy Award winner Andrew Watt, who has worked with artists as diverse as Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Pearl Jam and Ozzy Osbourne.

With a danceable rhythm, the track follows the success formula of “Cold, Cold Heart”, a mashup of the hits “Rocket Man” and “Sacrifice”, which Elton re-recorded in a duet with Dua Lipa last year. The difference is that Dua Lipa could be heard in the previous song. Britney’s voice is totally disfigured by the effects of the current track.
