The music video for the song “Every Breath You Take”, by the British band The Police, has surpassed one billion views on YouTube. Added to the platform in 2010, the clip became the 225th video to reach this milestone.
“Every Breath You Take” is taken from the album “Synchronicity”, released in 1983. Directed by Godley & Creme, the clip shows the trio in black and white, with Sting playing double bass, Andy Summers on guitar and Stewart Copeland on battery.
Of the videos that have surpassed one billion views, only seven are from clips from the 1980s. In addition to “Every Breath You Take”, this selected list also includes clips for “Sweet Child O ‘Mine” (by Guns N’ Roses), “Take On Me” (a-ha), “Billie Jean” (Michael Jackson) , “Never Gonna Give You Up” (Rick Astley), “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” (Cyndi Lauper) and “The Final Countdown” (Europe).
The Police are known for successful albums such as “Reggatta de Blanc” (1979), “Zenyatta Mondatta” (1980) and “Synchronicity” (1983). The band has sold over 75 million records worldwide and won two Brit Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and six Grammys – including the best pop performance by a duo or group for “Every Breath You Take” -, prior to parting ways in the 1980s.
The band’s YouTube channel has over 1.5 million subscribers and “Every Breath You Take”, their most popular video, averaged 300,000 views per day this year. One of the reasons for the song’s popularity (aside from its quality) is that it has been licensed for other uses, which brings fans back to the original song. A sample of the song can be heard in Puff Daddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You”, and it was also used in an advertising campaign by the search engine DuckDuckGo.
By the way, this wasn’t the first record for “Every Breath You Take”. In 2019, the song was voted the most listened to song at the BMI Pop Awards, with 15 million radio broadcasts. The song was also added to Spotify’s Billions Club last year after reaching over 1 billion streams on the audio platform.
