the wake of Gal Costa, who died at home at the age of 77 on Wednesday 9, will be open to the public, according to a statement released by his press office. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
The ceremony will be held at the Legislative Assembly, in San Paolo (SP), Friday 11, from 9:00 to 15:00. The burial will be closed only to close friends and relatives.
The singer was recently operated on to remove a lump in her right nasal cavity and for this reason she left the stage on the advice of her doctor. It was one of the highlights of the Primavera Sound festival last weekend, but the show was canceled at the last minute.
The operation was performed in September, after the singer performed at Coala, another music festival in São Paulo. She didn’t return to perform later, but she had a tour scheduled for December and January.
history in music
Gal Costa has been one of the greatest voices in Brazilian folk music since she began singing in the 1960s. As a teenager, she was part of the Doces Bárbaros group, along with fellow Bahianas Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia and Gilberto Gil. The group released a record that defined the musical genre in the 1970s.
He was also an important part of the tropicalist movement when he participated in the album “Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis”. In 1971, he was part of the “Fa-Tal” show, which also became a revered album in Brazilian music.
In the 1980s, her voice gave birth to soap opera themes, and her collaborative albums with several MPB artists were hugely successful. It was in this decade that Gal Costa embraced social causes and became an activist, using music to give visibility to causes such as drought in the Northeast.
His creations have always had the participation of important artists and, in his more recent works, Gal risked including electronic sounds to update his work, such as on the acclaimed 2011 album Recanto.
In 2019 he launched the lauded show A Pele do Futuro, with the musical direction of Pupillo and the general direction of Marcus Preto, which became a double CD and DVD.
Before his death, Gal had an intense professional life, with the tour “The various points of a star”, in which he interpreted the great hits of MPB of the 80s. A tour in Europe was also planned.
