The 80-year-old Israeli-Argentinian pianist suffers from a neurological disease that has progressed ‘significantly over the past year’
AFP – The famous Argentine-Israeli conductor and pianist Daniele Barenboimwho suffers from a neurological diseaseannounced this Friday 6, his resignation from Berlin Operawhich he had directed for three decades.
“Unfortunately, my health has deteriorated significantly over the past year,” Barenboim said in a statement. “I can no longer deliver the performance expected of a music director.”
The musician, who has held the post since 1992, said his decision to step down would be effective January 31.
Barenboim announced in October that he was suffering from a “serious neurological disease”.
The 80-year-old conductor, one of the greatest virtuosi of the 20th century, took a long break from his career in 2022.
Barenboim returned to the spotlight to direct the Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at two New Year’s concerts in Berlin – on December 31 and January 1 – to a packed Staatsoper, which gave him a standing ovation.
As expected, he will conduct the opera orchestra for the last three concerts this weekend, the Staatsoper has confirmed.
He headed the Berlin State Opera and its orchestra, the Staatskapelle, for three decades. His contract lasted until 2027.
