The singer releases the EP ‘Chega Mais’, with five songs ready for revelry, and also talks, in ‘Estadão’, about Margareth Menezes at the MinC and other topics
Ivete Sangalo he is very familiar with the road route of the Bahian carnival, which he has been traveling for almost three decades. in the PE Come closer, released this Thursday 19, with five songs – all of which she is co-author -, Ivete takes another path, just as important. She traces a procession of rhythms so that the festival, which will resume this year, rediscovers tradition.
Ivete celebrates the carnival rite through sound, in different genres. Her goal is to awaken people’s emotional memory, although the theme of her trio for this year is Back to the Future. A return to the future after a retrograde time, as she explains her ai Stage.
To the rhythm of the Bahian pagodas, one of the chants, The veal of Ivete, already in the repertoire of his shows, talks about very common themes also in the pop sertanejo universe: drinking, ex, single and female emancipation. Already go out, with a title taken from a Bahian expression, carries a blend of Bahian rhythms with merengue and lambada. The EP was recorded in January, during a presentation in Salvador, closed to guests.
The block of Ivete, the Owl, will show in Salvador on 18 and 20 February. On the 16th the carnival will open at popcorn trio (without strings separating paying and non-paying), broadcast live on TV Globo.
Before that, on January 28, Ivete will perform at Salvador Summer Festivalin which he has been present for 24 editions, and receives the peasant woman as a guest Luedji Luna, one of the names of the new generation of Bahian music. The idea is that they sing songs from their repertoire together.
In an interview with StageIvete talked about the new songs, her appreciation of the Bahian dialect, her friend’s appointment Margaret Menezes for the Ministry of Culture and also about the accusations he received for positioning himself politically during the presidential election.
You co-wrote the five songs on the EP. Was it important for you to be very present at this launch, which obviously already aims at the resumption of the street carnival?
My last three projects were all copyrighted. I’ve always composed, but, in the pandemic, I created this refuge (to compose). I work with art, in direct contact with people. My work has always had the reach of people. The transforming agent was the encounter. Without that, I found in composition a way not to go crazy. It was a way to breathe and channel my artistic compulsion. I realized this would save me which is why I launched so many projects during the pandemic.
How does it work for you, in this composition process, to establish which song will be released for Carnival, for example?
I think the songs already exist. And we connect with them. Like a radio. we (composers) it’s a dial that detects that frequency. I never think about making music for carnival or for love, for example. Here comes the first sentence, a rhythm, an idea. When you see it, it’s out, and define how you’re going to sing it.
Do you think of doing something to be the song of the summer, of the carnival, to enter the top 100 platforms? Is there work aimed at these titles?
Not like that. I never learned that. In fact, nobody dominates. Sometimes it coincides. The music is good, everyone listens and goes… It is this lack of control that makes us dare to do nothing premeditated. When I record a song, it must be very important to me. I think it’s great when it hits, but what determines whether or not it matters is the fact that I recorded this song, that I took it for myself. And I think about the audience, how they will react, sing, dance. It is the people who provoke the artist. But I understand when people want to arrive at Carnival with a trendy theme.
But, with one of the songs on the EP, the go out, you have established a Bahian expression among the general public. It’s already being talked about on Big Brother Brazil…
We (bayanos) we have a dialect that is not only folkloric, it is not only in Jorge Amado’s books. We really apply! ‘Go away’ has a thousand meanings. It’s something like when someone is going to give me a try and I say “go away, boy!”, something like “there’s nothing for you here”. Oxente, my king, bent barrel, sticky candy, has a soft scent… We talk a lot. I wanted to make a song with this dialect (Ivete sings part of the song). This song is wonderful! And I wanted to bring the lambada and the merengue, which bridge the refrain. Oh I love this!
What do you think this post pandemic carnival will be like? In recent years it has changed…
It will be a catharsis and a rescue. When we take on new perspectives, new visions, it’s very important, but continuity is needed to become something cultural. You must have rituals. With the pandemic disrupting, saving is needed to move forward. I think people follow the tradition of the tradition of Bahia. And this EP of mine is proof of that. It’s a carnival procession. There is a pagoda (bayan)he has a samba reggae, he has a samba reggae passion, he has the gallop and the merengão that makes him pulsate.
TV Globo will broadcast its Carnival opening parade. How many hours will it be?
I’m really happy with it. It will be the first time this happens. It will be a record that I have never had. As for the duration, that’s what God wants. When I join the trio, I don’t make an appointment later… You have to let the carnival happen.
I would like you to talk about the choice of Margareth Menezes as Minister of Culture. She too, like you, is one of the symbols of the Bahia carnival. How did you see this nomination?
She’s a longtime friend. She’s a good friend, she always has been. Before getting to know her intimately, I met her as an artist at a concert when I was 15 years old. It was the first time my father let me out at night. Margareth changed my view of music a lot. We got close in 1991. She still has the same sweetness. A woman who has strengthened her convictions. No wonder she was invited to become Minister of Culture. She is the person who has the most power to accomplish this. A politically, socially and culturally aware woman. We have to learn from her. She has a lot to teach us and a lot to give. To exercise culture, with the volume and speed you have, you need someone who understands this mechanism. And Margareth understands this perfectly.
Margareth can strengthen the carnival even more: do many people have a distorted view of it, ask to cancel it at the slightest sign of crisis?
These are occasional things. They are part of social demands. But I think people like carnival much more. As I believe there are many more good people than bad. Hence the victories, despite the battles suffered. Margareth’s presence is not conducive to the carnival because she is from Bahia and is part of the carnival. She favors because according to her carnival is a cultural force. But it will also strengthen parties in all regions of the country, the emergence of new artists and the presence of established artists. All this for the culture to survive.
There was a moment during the election where you were asked to take a political stand. And he ended up doing it. What was your impression, the reactions of the public?
This charge is natural. I completely understand. Sometimes I feel euphoric (speak), distressed, eager to scream. But I have to be very careful as I have a wide range of both good and bad things. I was not lighter after positioning myself, as I position myself daily. It is consistent and fundamental in my life and in the lives of so many people. And it’s not just positioning yourself to position yourself. I’ve seen a lot of people do it and I wanted to say “for God’s sake, don’t do it”. Although I am an intelligent, hardworking, mature woman, sometimes I ask myself “do I know how to talk about this topic?”. It’s a responsibility. And with the polarization so strong, so violent, I want to do it in a way that’s worth it. And not just to add fuel to the fire. However, from my posture, people know what I believe in, where I walk. My commitment in life. What are my movements, how I behave. This is already very clear to the public.
