“At this point, I don’t understand how we’re still doing this. Because every time it seems to be something against the odds. It honestly makes me feel like we’re the most boring band in the world, because it’s always like, ‘Oh, we got over it and now we’re making this record.’

In This is Why, even, the group tried to get rid of the concept of “overcoming” – albeit in a more global idea – in part of the songs. One of them is “C’est Comme Ça”, Recently released as a single. In promotional material released at the time the single was made available, Hayley stated:

“I’m trying to get rid of a survival narrative. The idea of impending doom is less catastrophic for me than not knowing anything about the future or my part in it. The guys and I are in much more stable places in our lives than ever before. And somehow that’s harder for me to adjust to.”

Hayley Williams, Paramore and guitar

In conversation during the podcast face to facewith members of the indie duo wet leg (formed by young Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers), hayley williams revealed a situation that he has not yet managed to overcome. “I think, for us, one of the most difficult or irritating things about being a woman [na música] it’s the stupid comments on the internet like, ‘oh, she’s holding that guitar, but it’s not really playing’. Sometimes I’m not using my guitar, but I only need to play it for the chorus, so there’s always a comment: ‘girls shouldn’t play guitar, women shouldn’t play guitar’. I hate it, it’s frustrating.”

Hayleythen joined the conversation to report an experience of his own that occurred in 2020, when he was promoting his first solo album, Petals for Armor. One of the appointments on the agenda was to perform at the famous Tiny Desk Concertspromoted in the United States by National Public Radio (NPR). On that rare occasion, she felt comfortable playing the guitar, which “defied” the sexist comments cited by Rhian Teasdale.

“I don’t even play guitar on stage, I don’t even dare. Because I love playing the guitar, but I don’t know if I could handle it [esse tipo de comentário] … man, I feel so strongly about what you said.”

It is worth remembering that, in the studio, Hayley never took over guitars Paramore, but has recorded keyboards on every album since the 2013 eponymous one. In addition, she has recorded guitars on three songs from Petals for Armor and on all the tracks on his second solo album, Flowers for Vases / Rests – work where she played all the instruments.
