With premiere scheduled for January 23, Amigos, Sons e Palavras will have 13 unpublished episodes with big names of Brazilian culture
Gilberto Gil returns to programming Brazil Channel with the third season of Friends, Sounds and Words (2018), a program that welcomes big names in Brazilian culture for a relaxed, light and informal chat. With 13 unpublished episodes, the third season premieres this Monday, January 23, at 8:45 pm, in which two programs will be shown a day.
guests like Fernanda Montenegro, Liniker, Marcelo Adnet, Demétrio Magnoli, Gabriela Lemos, Laymert Garcia, Hermano Vianna and Ronaldo Lemos are some of the confirmed guests for the new batch of intimate conversations, which always start with a song by the singer, specifically chosen for the guest and then the conversation unfolds from the song.

At a press conference, Gilberto Gil gave some details about the construction of the next season and how he selected the guests for the third year of Friends, Sounds and Words (2018). Regarding the choice of songs, the singer says that “the goal is for the songs to match the interviewees and the subjects that will be dealt with in the program, to connect that person to my poetic license”.
I don’t see them as interviewees, but as conversationalists. The criteria were varied, but mainly there is a collegial approach, as there is a singer, musician, communicator, theater people, comedians – we are all connected in some way in our work and in the art in our lives.”
about the songs, Gil says that, even without unpublished tracks, the vast repertoire of his career always ends up being brought in new versions, determined by the dialogues in particular. “It is one of the strong points of the program, this renewal of the versions of the songs, being more spontaneous, without extreme care in the art-finalization, everything is simpler, but a simplicity that I really like.”
Naturalness in the script
For the choice of subjects that will be brought up in the conversations, Gilberto Gil stresses that the choices follow the course of the chat. Although there is an agenda, there is also a lot of “record”, the way in which changes in the script that arise at the time are defined, depending on the themes that end up being presented with the development of each interviewee – which also have the attentive look of the directors Leticia Muhana and Patricia Guimarães.
There were specific conversations that came from topics I wanted to talk about, whether it’s music or even science, how technological advances affect people. I wanted to talk about a lot […] The varieties of themes that are proposed are very vast because we are all vast. There are fixed subjects brought up by the program’s directors, but everything is very fluid there in the conversation with the guest”.
collective construction
Muhana and guimaraesdirectors of the program, alongside the Gegê Artistic Productionsproduction management Flora Gil and musical direction of Well Gildescribed the third year of Gil in charge of Friends, Sounds and Words as “the most Gilly season there has been, because we’ve been maturing with him, perfecting the format. It’s always in his time, in his way, it’s all very true in every way.”
Already Andre Saddy, general director of content at Canal Brasil, described the importance of the artist in the schedule, reflecting the channel’s objective. “The program encourages reflection, that the subjects stay in our heads and awaken something in each one, dealing with the calm and depth that we are not used to seeing nowadays – all with the Gil way, the lightness in the conversations, which are, at the same time, intense and passionate”.
On the other hand, Gil highlighted his evolution as a “talker” as well as that of the production team. “Not the most Gilly season ever. It’s the season for all of us. For me it is very personal, there are testimonials that are moving for me, but it is something created by the team and by the modern possibility of communication”.
cultural relevance
Regarding the cultural relevance of the program in times of polarization in Brazil, Gilberto Gil ensures that art continues as a way for people to reconnect, allowing “to join languages, different forms of expression”.
At that moment when machines make people risk their individuality, of being connected to the possibilities of languages, they have the possibility of exorcising their evils. People who sing, dance, act, exercise language and varied airs, art allows this connection, and will always be a great league of humanity, the ‘object of conversations’.
Gil still points to the “spells of cultural history” as largely responsible for young people connecting with their work, even without experiencing the peak of their career and “for various reasons, they identify in some aspects with my persona”.
Young people are brought by these forms of sedimentation of images, sounds, they approach with this ‘fetishizing’ aspect of the cultural personality that I represent. […] Young people represent a cultural passing of the baton, which is very important”.
