1973 was a historic year for the style not only for releasing iconic albums, but also for founding groups that would become legendary.
The year 1973 was decisive for music, especially rock. Artists and bands that are now legendary released their masterpieces in that period, such as pink Floyd (The Dark Side of the Moon), Elton John (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) and Led Zeppelin (Houses of the Holy), just to name a few.
It was also a year marked by the birth of several bands of the genre, many of them still active, even without some of their original members. The following list, inspired by a survey made available by the loudwirepresents seven bands that were created in 1973 – and, consequently, complete 50 years of foundation in 2023.
Bands turning 50 in 2023
AC DC
The legendary hard rock group narrowly misses this list. THE AC DC was founded in November 1973 and played its first show on the last day of that year. the guitar brothers angus and Malcolm Young came up with the idea for the project and called dave evans for vocals, Larry Van Kriedt down and Colin Burgess for the battery.
The first more stable formation of the group kept only the brothers Young. In 1977, they were already accompanied by bon scott (voice / since 1974), cliff williams (low / since 1977) and Phil Rudd (drums / since 1975). That, of course, didn’t stop them from recording a series of albums until they closed with such a lineup, but classics like Powerage (1978) and highway to hell (1979) were born with angus, Malcolm, Bon, Phil and Cliff.
Few line-up changes took place thereafter. The most notorious occurred in 1980, with the death of Scott and Brian Johnson joining in his place. angus, Phil (despite the comings and goings) and Cliff follow together from Brian until today – Malcolm was replaced due to health issues in 2014, by his nephew, stevieand died in 2017.
kiss
THE kiss, just barely, is also off this list. But for another reason: they consolidated the lineup in the early days of 1973, so they would almost be in an article about 1972.
The group’s roots go back to another project, the Wicked Lesterwhich gathered Paul Stanley (voice and guitar) and Gene Simmons (voice and bass) to a series of other musicians. With the end of this, another band was created just by Stanley and simmons. Two other musicians came from newspaper advertisements: the drummer Peter Criss and the guitarist Ace Frehleythe latter performing its actual test in January 1973.
The band’s first album, self-titled, only came out in 1974. Success came towards the end of 1975, with the live album live!. criss came out in 1980 and frehleyin 1982. Both returned in 1996, but left again in the early 21st century. Still, the group never ceased activities: Stanley and simmons they went ahead with substitutes. today with Tommy Thayer on the guitar and Eric Singer on drums, the quartet is on a farewell tour.
Journey
In essence, the Journey it would be a supergroup, as it brought together musicians from other consolidated projects: Santana, Steve MillerBand and Frumious Bandersnatch. The leadership came from two graduates of the first mentioned, Neal Schon (guitar) and Gregg Rollie (keyboards and vocals). However, they only took off in 1977, when rollie was more focused on keyboards and a new vocalist, Steve Perrybrought the necessary shine.
In the 1980s, with Jonathan cain instead of Greggbroke out for good and released songs like the timeless “Don’t Stop Believin‘”. They broke up in 1987, got back together in 1995 and have remained active ever since, but Perry came out in 1998.
Kansas
There may be some controversy with the presence of the Kansas on this list, as different incarnations of the band have existed since the end of the 1960s – including the name that enshrined those involved. However, they have changed nicknames a few times. Only in 1973 did they decide to remain as Kansas and stabilized their classical training.
It took some time, but they broke out for good in 1976, with the album leftoverture. It’s from him that the hit “Carry On Wayward Son”. The next disc Point of Know Return (1977), brings the success “Dust in the Wind”.
Quiet Riot
many fans of Quiet Riot they have no idea that the band has existed since 1973. Even because its most iconic members were not part of it at the beginning. The project was founded by guitarist Randy Rhoadsmuch more famous for his meteoric work with Ozzy Osbourneand the bassist Kelly Garni.
the vocalist Kevin DuBrowwho would become the face of the group at its peak, arrived in 1975, along with drummer Drew Forsyth. The guys even recorded two albums (and the bassist arrived in 1978), but the works only came out in Japan and didn’t chart. The project came to an end in 1980, but returned with another lineup in 1982, bringing Dubrow, sarzothe guitarist Carlos Cavazo and the drummer Frankie Banali.
They only became known in 1983, with metal health, the first heavy metal album to top the US charts. The peak was not lasting, since the following albums were not successful, but it was enough to build a very solid fan base – so much so that the group continues until today with only sarzoas Dubrow and Banali passed away and cavazo don’t want to know about coming back.
bad company
Another supergroup, but this one kept the moniker to the end. THE bad company rose from the ashes of bands like Free, mott the hoople and King Crimson. They were owned by none other than Peter Grantthe legendary and irascible manager of the Led Zeppelin.
With the involvement of already known musicians, like the vocalist Paul Rodgers and the guitarist Mick Ralphs, it didn’t take long for them to succeed. Since the first album, homonymous, they are known. Line-ups varied – drummer Simon Kirke is the only one to participate in all activities – but the group was only on hiatus during the years 1982 and 1986.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Can’t say that the Bachman-Turner Overdrive was a supergroup, but one of the members, the vocalist and guitarist Randy Bachmanwas famous for his work with the The Guess Who. With two brothers from Randy (the drummer Robbie Bachman and the guitarist Tim Bachman) and bassist Fred Turnerformed one of the most famous groups in Canadian rock.
Like some of the names mentioned, the BTO also oscillated in continuity. It was on hiatus between 1980 and 1983; then from 2005. It returned in 2009 as an almost solo initiative by Randy and fredalready called Bachman & Turner.
