The second and last day of Salvador Summer Festival, which took place this Sunday 29 January, in the city’s Parco delle Esposizioni, staged shows such as Saulo and Marina Sena, Jão and Pitty, Luísa Sonza and Alcione, Ludmilla and Gloria Groove and Baiana System with Olodum. Singers Bell Marques and Léo Santana were the only attractions of the festival not to bring guests: this year the event featured musical encounters on stage.
The first show of the day brought together the Rio de Janeiro rapper Xamã and the Gilsons trio – formed by José Gil, Francisco Gil and João Gil, respectively son and grandsons of Gilberto Gil. Despite the 30 degrees, at 4pm the rink was already much more crowded than the shows that opened on the first day.
Thanks to Xamã, one of the most listened to rap artists of the moment, owner of the hit bossy, and the Gilsons, a group that has been featured at festivals across the country. Furthermore, the line up of that second day, full of names from pop music current and from carnival medallions from Baianoattracted a larger audience than on day one.
Xamã and Gilsons, who had already performed together in Europe, celebrate the meeting by saying that rap is already part of Brazilian music. The declaration was sealed with the song Walk in faithby Gil, improvised by the rapper.
BaianaSystem and Olodum create BaianaOlodum
In addition to big concerts full of successes, the groups Olodum and BaianaSystem – two groups of different generations, but with the appreciation of Afro-Bahian pop music, especially samba reggae as a common goal – did something on stage that should be customary in stage meetings: creating something new – something not always possible due to the artists’ schedule and commitments.
The two groups, according to the event’s production, began rehearsals for the festival show in September 2022. The result was in tune on stage. In the opening, the mix of general joyfrom Olodum, e Guinea grassof Baiana System, clarified to the public what the meeting would be like.
The mix of Bahian sounds, such as samba reggae, dub – the electronic version of reggae – and popular music with Olodum drums, showed that Bahian music has never stopped in time and, at the same time, retains its ancestry, a imprint not only of music, but of the cultural identity of its people.
This feature is also present in the texts. Pharaohknown in the voice of Margaret Menezeswhich talks about how black culture has endured in the streets of Salvador, especially in Pelourinho, which, in all honesty, has taken and maintains the roots of African music and culture.
Passapusso, after singing South American, recited the verses contained in the song of which he is one of the composers. “In the open veins of Latin America / There’s a crossfire burning in the corners / A coup d’état to the sound of a carbine, a rifle / If justice is blind, let’s take those who fled.” And he concluded with “he ran away”, referring to former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Saulo Fernandes and Marina Sena paid tribute to Gal
The singer Saulo Fernandes, one of the big names of Bahian carnivalhe opened his presentation by joining his band with strings and winds from the Santo Antônio Orchestra, from the city of Conceição do Coité, in Bahia.
It was together with classical musicians that Saul showed the public one of his greatest hits, the incendiary Eve. “This is a festival that your father and mother watch from home. You have to do it right,” Saulo joked, speaking of the importance of the event in the Bahian calendar.
Calling the host Marina Sena on stage, Saulo opened the space for the singer from Minas Gerais to show two of her hits, assuming And he came back to me. Marina also paid tribute to singer Gal Costa who died in November 2022 while performing the song passion flowerrecorded by Gal in 1974.
“What Gal left is forever. Nothing after her has been the same. And not just her singing, but her thoughts, her free body. We were born on the same day, September 26,” said Marina exiting the stage.
Gal’s last studio recording is with Marina Sena. Together they recorded the song For Lennon and McCartneyreleased as a single a month after Gal’s death.
Luísa Sonza invites Alcione to settle down with romantic songs
Singer Luísa Sonza, the fourth attraction to take the stage on the second day of the Salvador Summer Festivalin which he sang songs like vip, expensive hotel And angry. The singer’s presentation was one of the most eagerly awaited by an audience that wanted to listen to pop music, even for the day’s lineup.
Luisa’s guest was Alcione, who is celebrating his 50th career this year. The singer, just announced by her landlady, was welcomed by the audience shouting “Brown”. Seated, Alcyone makes a small appearance singing three songs from her repertoire: Drives me crazy, You make my head spin And my ebony.
Before meeting on stage, Alcione praised Luísa. “It’s a children’s show (Luísa is 23). I like her mood.” The singer also claimed that he doesn’t have any musical bias. “If the music is good, I like it. I like music and people who like to sing. If you do your job with joy, I like it.”
Alcione also highlighted his bond with Bahia. “It was here that I basically started my career. In the beginning I recorded many composers from Bahia. They already put me in lockdown, I already performed at Lavagem do Bonfim”.
THE second evening of the Summer Festival it ended with the performance of Ludmilla who invited the singer Gloria Groove on stage. The show was one of the most anticipated of the event – anticipation created by Ludmilla’s presentation at the last Rock in Rio.
