Jonathan Ferr is one of the main names in Brazilian urban Jazz and surprises with his second album ‘Liberdade’
Jonathan Ferr launched last Monday, 30, Freedomthe album succeeds the artist’s first work, Cure of 2019. With 10 tracks, iron debut as a singer alongside big names like rashid, Luedji Luna, Tássia Reis, Kaê Guajajara and Jesuton.
iron is from Rio de Janeiro, was born in the suburb of Madureira and is one of the main names in national jazz. Mixed several styles to create your own. He began his career as a pianist and seeks to represent Afrofuturism.
When I talk about Afrofuturism, I think my role in that thinking is to create narratives that haven’t happened yet, so that people can think it’s possible.”
Like this, ironexplores the frontiers of Jazz and reinvents it with broken beat and other electronic resources. Among his inspirations are North American musicians Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane and Sun Ra.
Freedom
In Freedom, Jonathan Ferr announces that he has not come to entertain and “yes to connect”. His proposal is to cause reflections for those who listen to his music; “every artist is a political being” she shoots. At 34, he was responsible for the entire sound production of the album, and in addition to the piano, the musician is also in charge of the synth basses, synthesizers and rhodes pianos.
“Cura, my previous album, is a very introspective work from when we were at home because of Covid (…) While Freedom, it brings another place, it is a process of self-knowledge, a freedom inside and not outside. I want to bring about the emancipation of people from themselves.”
My sun
In “My sun”, rashid rhymes interspersed with the chorus sung by the duo àvuá and by himself Jonathan, who also signs the script for the clip, directed by Leo Ferraz. Ailton Graça stars in the work that bets on a narrative about the inauguration of the first black president of Brazil. jonathan appears as an activist for the ‘Brotherhood’ party and promotes positivity and hope.
“This song is an African idea that says that we are all born with a midday sun inside us, and little by little it goes out. We have to light that sun and look for what promotes its rise,” he says.
I wanted to bring that idea into the album. It’s my strongest magic album. That’s why I wrote the lyrics.”

The album release tour Freedomstarts at Sesc Pompeia in São Paulo on February 4th. jonathan also appears in Mother’s house in Salvador on February 3rd, and heads to Rio Grande do Sul to participate in the Summer Porto Alegre 9th of the same month. In April he will be in the N projectCarioca Nights in Rio de Janeiro day 14.
