Rihanna on returning to the stage: ‘I feel open to creating strange things’

Rihanna performs next Sunday (12) at the Super Bowl after seven years away from the stage

Rihanna returns to the stage on Sunday (12) at Super Bowl 2023. In a press conference held this Thursday, the 9th, the singer gave details of her preparation for the event, which takes place three months after the birth of her son.

“I was like, are you sure?” she said, “I’m three months postpartum and I’m not sure I should be making big life decisions!”

Still, there was “something exciting about the challenge,” she continued. “It’s important for me to do this, it’s important for the representation, it’s important for my son to see this.”

With Rihanna’s return to the stage after seven years of hiatus, the Setlist has become a concern for fans and many are wondering about the release of new music.

“Musically, I’m feeling open. I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating new things, different, weird things. [Coisas] that may never make sense to my fans, the people who know the music I put out. I want to play, I want to have fun with the music.”

Super Bowl 2023 Setlist

Rihannashared what it was like to revisit his catalog of songs after a period without singing them and what criteria he considered to choose the tracks present in the setlist for the presentation

The setlist was definitely the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. The hardest part was deciding how to maximize the entire setlist into 13 minutes, but also celebrating… This show will be a celebration of my back catalog in the best possible way. Reducing 17 years of work to 13 minutes of presentation is not easy. Some songs had to be left out, and that’s fine.

Still on the selection, Rihannadetailed how rehearsals helped her choose which songs best fit her performance. In addition, the businesswoman pointed out that she already has about ’39 versions of the setlist so far’.

Every change matters – even if it’s a small detail. If I want to add a guitar, delete an arrangement from a song, add something different… put in a new song or take out a whole song… everything must be calculated.

Surrounded by mysteries, the singer from Barbados also revealed that she will bring references to the Caribbean island where she was born. “That is, in fact, one of the great reasons why I accepted to sing in super bowl: representativeness. Representing immigrants, representing my country Barbados, representing black women.”

That’s the key for people to see the possibilities. And I feel so grateful to be here and to be able to be that voice. It seems like it could only have been now. When you become a mother, something happens and you feel like you can conquer the world; and this is one of the biggest stages on the planet.

At the end of the conference, the Apple Music released more teaser of the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show of Rihanna, which will be held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Watch in full below:
