Actor Neil Patrick Harris has recalled working on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, describing the production schedule as a dream job that required filming for only half the year.
His comments come as public interest in the central cast has resurfaced following recent statements by co-star Josh Radnor regarding the real-life relationships among the actors years after the series concluded.
How I Met Your Mother is an American television sitcom created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays that originally aired on CBS from 2005 to 2014. The show followed a close group of friends in New York City, starring Harris alongside Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel.
When the sitcom Friends ended in 2004, television was left without a dominant network comedy until CBS premiered How I Met Your Mother a year later. All nine seasons of the comedy series are currently available in the Disney+ content catalogue.
Cast Relationships Outside the Screen
The cast has returned to the center of public conversation after Radnor, who portrayed lead character Ted Mosby, reflected on how the stars interact today. Radnor recognized that while the cast members still love each other, they do not maintain an active relationship or frequent contact in their daily lives.
That current dynamic contrasts with the tight bond shared by their characters across nine seasons on screen. While Radnor focused on how their off-screen friendship evolved after filming ended, Harris offered insight into the workplace environment that brought them together.
Harris, who played the character Barney Stinson throughout the show, recalled that working on the series was far from a conventional job. He described the period as a dream job and highlighted the generous schedule enjoyed by the cast.
The Filming Schedule and Table Reads
The actor explained that the team only filmed 22 weeks out of the year, matching the 22 episodes that made up each season. The cast effectively worked for only half the year and received one week off every four weeks while writers continued writing and adjusting scripts.
Detailing a typical work week, Harris said Mondays were exceptionally light, with actors spending barely an hour at the studio. The workday began with a table read alongside cast members, network executives, and writers to read the script aloud and determine which jokes worked and which needed revision before actors went home.
On Tuesdays, actors arrived at 10 a.m. to rehearse scenes with the director. After lunch, approximately 15 crew members would enter the room to watch the cast stage the episode like a theatrical play, allowing the team to test reactions before actors departed for the day.
Production Days and Modern Streaming Access
Filming took place across Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Harris noted that actors were only required to be present on set during the specific scenes in which they appeared, allowing them free time on days when their characters were not involved.
The series was produced using standard sitcom staging, but without a live studio audience in the room. Harris recalled having up to three days to play when not needed on set, summarizing the role as the best job he had experienced.
Despite controversy surrounding its polarizing series finale, How I Met Your Mother maintained strong popularity throughout its nine-season run. Fans can stream every episode of the show on Disney+ as the cast members reflect on its legacy.
