Production has begun on the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building, with the action moving overseas to the United Kingdom for the first time in the show's history, according to reporting by Lenta.ru.
The Hulu series, created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, follows three neighbors from the upscale Arconia apartment building in New York who investigate crimes and document their work in a podcast. The core trio of Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are all returning.
What Drives Season 6
The new season picks up from the shock ending of season five, in which beloved podcast host Cinda Canning, played by Tina Fey, died. Before her death, Canning had been working on an episode called "The Girl with the Curls," focused on a British woman suspected of killing a member of the royal family's descendants. Canning believed the woman was innocent and had planned to prove it and bring her to the United States for her safety.
With that work left unfinished, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel take on a double mission: find whoever killed Cinda and complete the investigation she left behind. That sends them to Britain for what the show describes as their first podcast recorded outside the United States.
Co-creator John Hoffman said the team spent a long time thinking about where else the story could unfold. Once they began looking at the origins of detective fiction, he said, the answer became clear: the home country of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, who established the foundations of the genre.
A Large British Cast
The sixth season will feature a significant number of guest stars, most of them British. The confirmed additions include Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag), David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), Adrian Lukis (The Crown), Katharine Hunter (Poor Things), Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), Sean Teale (Lady), Ria Zmitrowicz (Heartstopper), Matthew Beard (Testament of Youth), Anjana Vasan (Killing Eve), Derek Jacobi (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider), and Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey).
In June 2026 it was also reported that Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan and Simone Ashley would appear in the season, though details about their characters have not been disclosed.
Whether Meryl Streep will return remains unconfirmed. She was spotted in London during the same period filming began, but neither the show's creators nor Streep herself have confirmed her involvement. Fans have suggested she may appear at least briefly, given that her character Loretta has been a companion to Oliver and has actively helped with investigations since the fourth season.
When to Expect It
No premiere date has been set for season six. Based on Steve Martin's social media, the team only began shooting in May 2026, making a 2027 release the most likely scenario.
The show has earned 61 Emmy nominations and seven wins across its run, along with Golden Globe nominations for Martin, Short, and Gomez individually. The season four cast also won the SAG Award for best ensemble in a comedy series.
