Bruce Springsteen announced on Saturday that his wife Patti Scialfa is in remission and cancer-free after living with multiple myeloma for over eight years. The 76-year-old rocker shared the health update during a virtual appearance at Boston's Pan-Mass Challenge fundraiser, which raises money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Scialfa, 73, was diagnosed with the blood cancer in 2018 but did not make her condition public until 2024.
"As you know, Patti's been living with her multiple myeloma for over eight years, but now, thankfully, she is in remission," Springsteen told supporters during the event. Representatives for Springsteen did not immediately respond to a request for further comment from the Daily Mail.
During his speech, Springsteen thanked researchers, doctors, and nurses for their dedication. "However, like millions of families facing cancer, we've learned what every patient learns: Hope has a face," Springsteen said. "It's our physician, who refuses to stop searching and caring. It's our nurse, who sits beside us when we are scared." In other recent news involving the musician, Mick Jagger took a swipe at Springsteen over anti-Trump rants at gigs.
Fundraiser Speech and Medical Research
Springsteen said he and Scialfa witnessed the work of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute throughout her treatment. "Patti's journey has taught us something: I hope every one of us and every American can understand," he said. "Medical research isn't an idea. It isn't politics. It isn't a line in a budget."
He added that research is the reason families find hope when it seems hardest to find, warning that losing sight of that means losing sight of one another. Springsteen concluded his message by thanking participants: "Patti and I are grateful for everything you continue to do - thank you." According to the Mayo Clinic, multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell.
The couple were previously pictured taking the stage together in February 2023 in Hollywood, Florida, as well as attending an Academy Museum event in Los Angeles in October 2025.
Documentary and Family Details
Scialfa publicly disclosed her diagnosis nearly a year ago in the documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which explained why she stepped back from regular touring. "This affects my immune system, so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go," Scialfa said in the film.
"Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that's been a treat," Scialfa added. "That's the new normal for me right now, and I'm OK with that." Before revealing her illness publicly, Scialfa told the Asbury Park Press in 2023 that she had been focusing on recording a solo album while helping care for her son Sam's daughter, Lily.
Springsteen and Scialfa married in 1991 and have three children: Evan, 36, Jessica, 34, and Sam, 32. Springsteen's career spans more than five decades, featuring landmark albums such as Born to Run, Born in the U.S.A., and The River. He also made headlines through the Road Diary documentary and was the focal point of the biographical film Deliver Me From Nowhere, where Jeremy Allen White portrayed the singer.
