British actor Paul Bettany revealed that fans in New York City still recognize him for his nude scene in the 2001 movie A Knight's Tale 25 years after its release.
Speaking at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026 on August 14, the 55-year-old actor explained how local taxi drivers regularly shout out to him on the street.
Bettany told People that cab drivers roll down their window and say, "You're the naked guy!" when they spot him walking in the city. "They have me at a disadvantage," he added.
Bettany played the historical poet Geoffrey Chaucer in the 2001 adventure and action film, which was directed by Brian Helgeland and starred the late Heath Ledger alongside Shannyn Sossamon, Rufus Sewell and Alan Tudyk. In one famous scene right at the beginning of his career, Bettany walked down a rural road entirely naked.

Memories of Heath Ledger and A Knight's Tale
Despite the enduring popularity of the scene, Bettany admitted that he has not rewatched A Knight's Tale since it premiered in 2001.
During an appearance at LA Comic Con in 2025, per Entertainment Weekly, Bettany described the film as feeling like "another lifetime ago." He admitted that when fans approach him to quote lines from the movie on the street, he literally cannot remember any of it.

Bettany also shared an emotional reason for avoiding the movie, referencing co-star Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose in 2008. "I saw [the film] when it first came out. I've never seen it again since. There are lots of reasons for that, and just one of them is that I miss Heath too much," Bettany said.

Ledger was an acclaimed Australian actor who achieved international fame before his death at age 28 in New York City. Bettany and Ledger formed a close friendship while filming the medieval comedy-drama together.
Career Slump and Vision Casting
Bettany confessed last year that he thought his "career was over" before landing the iconic role of Vision in 2008's Iron Man alongside Robert Downey Jr.
Prior to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bettany had starred in major Hollywood productions, including the Oscar-winning drama A Beautiful Mind and the smash hit mystery thriller The Da Vinci Code.
However, just before landing his Marvel role, Bettany was told he would "never work again" by an influential Hollywood producer.

During a December 2025 appearance on BBC Radio 2, Bettany told host Gary Davies that his career had been on the rise when he turned down a movie proposed by the unnamed executive following the birth of his son. Bettany recalled that turning down the project "really stuck in his craw."
Bettany branded the producer an "apex predator" and told the executive to "mind his manners." Although Bettany walked away with his legs shaking out of fear that the producer's threat might prove true, his fortunes changed within minutes.
While sitting down on Sunset Boulevard in panic, Bettany received a phone call from Avengers director Joss Whedon offering him the role of Vision. "I sat down, I think I was on Sunset [Boulevard], and my phone rang and it was [Avengers director] Joss Whedon and he said 'Do you want to play Vision?' And I said yes," Bettany shared. While he never returned inside to confront the executive, Bettany admitted that he cursed at the producer's building after receiving the good news.
Marvel Franchise and Family Life
Bettany went on to voice the supercomputer JARVIS and appear as Vision across eight Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, as well as the television series WandaVision, which aired on Disney+ in 2021.
In the Russo Brothers' 2018 blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War, Vision was killed by Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, who ripped the Mind Stone from Vision's forehead to complete his Infinity Gauntlet and snap away half of all life in the universe.
Despite Vision's death, the character returned twice as "Ghost" Vision and "White" Vision in WandaVision. Bettany is set to reprise the role in the upcoming spin-off project VisionQuest, hitting theaters in October 2026.

Off screen, Bettany has been married to American actress Jennifer Connelly, 55, since 2003. The couple share a 23-year-old son, Stellan, and a 15-year-old daughter, Agnes, while Bettany is also step-father to Connelly's 29-year-old son, Kai from a previous relationship.
Connelly, an Academy Award-winning actress known for her roles in film and television, met Bettany while they were co-starring in A Beautiful Mind before marrying two years later.
